tips for hunting wild Russian boar - Tuesday, March 25, 2008 9:35 PM ( #1 )
Could anyone give me some tips on hunting wild Russian boar?   They are not feral hogs but actual purebred Russian boar.  Have never hunted them before and will be in February, 2009  Any advice will be welcome and appreciated

One thing I can tell you is that when you are hunting hogs you must really be conscious of the wind, even more so than when hunting deer.  Their eyes are not very good, but their smellers are A#1.

The older I get(and I'm only 45-relax) the more I use my bow. That being said if bowhunting I would wait for a quartering away shot. Boar have an "armored" grizzle type plate that covers a majority of the heart/lung region. If you google wild boar anatomy you can get an idea of where the vitals are. The grizzle plate I'm talking about is like a piece of grizzle you might find on a cheap steak. It's about an inch thick or more. Pass thrus on a broadside shot are fairly uncommon. If your doing it with a gun I'd go at least 270 with a sturdy bullet and put it in the boiler room. Don't worry. The part about them chasing you is true though. Some are inclined to charge you if they see you some are not. Go have fun. Where you going??

jim and sab,
thanks for the info.  we will be hunting in a spuce swamp in february in upper michigan(heavy snow conditions).  we will have our british .303's for a longer range shot and our .50 caliber inline muzzleloaders for a closer shot.  it all depends on the terrain.

If you will be here in upper Michigan, especially that time of year, I can just about guarantee that you will be up close and personal with the inlines!  That should be some fun!!!

Get yourself some of the Tinks Sow in Heat. Use it just as you would for deer. I tried it on a hunt here in Texas at the first part of last month and it worked great. My wife shot a 200+lb  boar. Came in sniffing. Be cautious as said earlier with the wind. The do have great noses, and always be aware of the sow's with little ones. They will get ya.

Finnally talked my wife into hunting them this year! she wants to do it with a bow, but I'm carrying a .454 for backup. It's called a poormans bear hunt for a reason. Get just off the trail betewwn food and water or food and bedding and you get a shot! It's awsome. I'd put some pics on but can't get them to copy over!
