new to bows

OK.. a little back ground first. My youngest boy (12) has gone out with me since he was pretty much old enough to walk. He is now of age and really wants me and him to get into bow hunting. I know next to nothing and probably less about bows... so here's where I need some help. We need to find a good starter pair of bows with the abililty to take down everything from small game to elk. My youngest is pretty strong, but I doubt he could draw anything over about 45 lbs right now, so adjustable would be beneficial. We are hoping to pick these up in the spring/summer and work on our form and skill till 09 and then hunt the 09 seasons. Any pointers for buying a bow for two newbs to thsi? I have shot before and I am more comfortable with my fingers than with a release. I can make pretty consistant shots with an old bear compound I used in that past as well as with my father in laws long bow, about 30 yards out into a paper plate. My son has only shot the youth bows which lack in power or adjustability, but he did fine with those while they held up to the kids abuse. Paper plates out to about 20 yards I think. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

These two are good bows that your son could try out, they will be just enough for elk hunting, but will be good to start with. These are PSE bows, I don't currently have a link to Browning archery products, but they are part of the PSE line, as soon as I get a link to the Browning line I will forward a link to good bows from that line as well. pse-archery.com/prod.php?k=60753&u=0741OC pse-archery.com/prod.php?k=60753&u=0401S3 For you shooting fingers this would be a good choice, I currently use this one as my target bow, but it is an excellent hunting bow for someone who shoots fingers. pse-archery.com/prod.php?k=55445&u=0823MF If you need any more information let me know, I am currently Field Staff for PSE and can help you out with any questions about PSE or Browning archery products.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks Well have I got a deal for you,... well at least for your boy if he would like it. I've got a Ben Pearson "Probe" compound in camo (youth) 40# @ 25" Right hand draw, has a 3 finger glove, arm guard, target quiver, 3 pin sight, string peep, with some assorted used aluminum arrows with field tips. I dont remember what they are cut down to but it's within a inch or so of the draw length of the bow. (25 1/2" - 27") IF your boy would like to have all of this,... he's welcome to them. FREE ! All I'd require would be whatever the shipping fees would be to your door and the address to send it all to. The bow is in like new condition used slightly with a new string. I got this for my daughter about 4 years ago as she looked as if she was aquiring an interest in the sport (little hints about it while I shoot) so I purchased it and she did for a while but the interests changed,....... to BOYS !! So in any event,... it's been sitting in my reloading shop just hanging on it's hook waiting for me to find a oppourtunity to help someone out. I've always been one to encourage the outdoor shooting sports to kids both archery and rifle. So there you have it,... it's a standing offer to you and your son. I'll post a couple of pictures of the equipment below for you to see what it all looks like. Let me know IF your interested,.....

Thanks topgun,... but as far as I'm concerned it's my way of perpetuating our heritage of hunting. Not many youngsters in today's world take the time or the initive to do anything but melt into a chair and play online computer games. When I see or hear of a young man or woman wanting to get involved in either hunting or fishing but haven't the means and there's something I know I can do to help em' out,... I'm gonna' do it the best I can! I was VERY fortunate to have a father who was VERY active in archery/ fishing/ and hunting in general. All my neighbor kids didn't even have a clue what they were missing.

Mike,.. I just returned from town and the archery equipment as shown in my initial post is on it's way to you and your son. They said you should be receiving it Tuesday, April 15th. I had them place a copy of the shipping billing in a packing slip envelope which should be stuck to the outside of the cardboard box so you'll have a copy. Your UPS tracking number is : 1Z9V48760375044805 If I might request something,... if you could would you post a picture of your son with his new bow on the this forums thread ? I'd like to see the smile in that young mans eyes.

Mike,... I received your sons letter today,.. please tell him he's VERY welcome. I'm sorry to hear he can't draw it as of yet BUT,.. some small chores around the house helping out mom and dad raking leaves etc., that allow some arm exercise will build those muscles up in no time. You'll not only get to shoot it sooner by exercising your arm muscles,.. you'll also be helping out by doing things for your parents and your home. It's a win-win situation!

Once again... I thank you Terry... from the bottom of my son's heart. He bought himself a 20lb set of barballs and is lifting them nightly right now to strengthen up him arms a bit... a little trouble drawing the bow still. But his heart is in it all the way. I sent you a check to cover shipping, or I should say my son covered shipping from his own money. Let me know if the amount is correct as my wife handled it all for him. I will post some pics soon

Mike everything is fine,... the check was enclosed with the letter. You have a great son,.. not many his age would take the time to write a thank you letter and have any money let alone use their own money to pay shipping on an item such as this. He's off to a GOOD start for such a young man. A good exercise for the barbells would be to bend 90* at the waist and pull up to his chest. He'll be drawing that bow in no time. Best wishes to you young man,.. you'll have to post some pictures of your first harvest.
