let's talk hunting tactics - Thursday, May 01, 2008 10:24 PM ( #1 )
So, I have read several books and did a lot of talking to those that have hunted bear previously... but I could still use as many pointers as possible.
Any good tips for hunting Colorado Bear? We have a no bait law, so its a spot and stalk method as well as tracking when able.
I do have some help in that several ranchers I know will be keeping cattle up there and will be letting me know if they spot a bear and the area.

Any advice for the novice?
I will be hunting with my youngest, going in on horse back.

Thanks
Mike

Mike,
It has been my experience in looking for bears here in the Bayfield area that the more scouting you can do the better. Having those guys looking for you as well is great, but bears like to roam. Since we can not use bait a very good tactic to use that i suggest not using with your youngest out with you is a varmint call. I think you will be impressed how quick one will come in if he is around. The reason I say to do this without your youngest with you is that sometimes these bears come in hot looking for that free meal and if you are caught off guard or he is really hungary it is no place for a small child. It can be a dangerous situation, But most of the ones I have seen are just very curious. Otherwise I suggest just getting out and do alot of glassing and hiking around. I hope this helps out a little.
Thank God for this wonderful life and the men and women protecting it for us. You are ALL Heroes!!

I agree, use the old predator call, I got lucky in 06 out i AZ, called in a Mountain Lion with an injured fawn call. Good luck

No worries this year, I didn't draw a tag. I guess I could get an OTC tag still though... was hoping to go early.
Oh well, I made the effort though!!!!

This is how I do it!!!  First find a bear area. Someplace with water and a lot of cover. Then try to set youir stand over a food source or a bedding area. I  like to find tracks before I put my stand up or big bear trails. Then if your baitng build a crib for the bait and set your stand about 20 yards from bait. Wait and pray and get a big one. I also like to leave an old pair of socks in my bait just so they get used to my smell. And I also try to keep my times I bait always the same. I like to give them a schedule of when the bait is going to be there.
