Jeezely, 'Dan ... must be nice out there with no snow ... we've still got too much here to see much of anything but road top ... altho it's gettin' there, and by next weekend we might be able to catch a few of 'em runnin' on the shoulders and in the ditches ...

Yeah, that's a lot of fun, and a good way to get a kid into shootin' ... I grew up with plenty of chances to take the BB gun (and after I wuz about eight-years-old, the .22) and wander off to find gophers when and where I could ... I learned a lot about shooting from that experience ... and it's still about the cheapest way to practice on hold/squeeze/sight alignment & sight picture and other skills ...

We were hunting around a 75 acre field .I was riding a four wheeler with a friend as mine blew up last fall and I havent replaced it yet. We rode back and forth across the field shooting gophers as we saw them. We spent about 3 hours shooting. Gophers were thick. MY friend Les I rode with has already shot thousands out of there previously.

I hope to get out after the sage rats in the near future!
With the weather we've had this weekend, they ought to be crawling all over the place!

This ain't about "gophers" ... but I don't see a thread about "varmints" in general ... so ...

While werkin' with a guy today, the discussion turned to prairie dogs ... I asked him how he felt about folks shootin' @ 'em ... he said, "Any time ... "

WOOHOO!!!

Been tryin' to find a town nearby, so I wouldn't hafta drive most of a day to enjoy that type of action ... this is about a half-hour from our house ...

Son #1 is arrivin' tomorrow nite for a weekend with us ... he's bringin' the boys, since their mom is in Atlanta on a buyin' trip ... also bringin' the dog, so I'm gettin' the new play yard fence done just in time ...

OOPS!

tornado warnings goin' on, and MAJOR rain/wind @ the moment with LARGE hail also possible ... better shut down and get off the 'net ...

Gopher shooting?

I've always been a big fan of Gopher fishing myself.

You get yourself a fishing pole, a lawn chair, a big jar of peanut butter, a case full of adult beverages and a lazy summer day.  Then you find a farmer with a gopher problem and it's "gopher fishin' time!"

"GOPHER ON!"  LOL!!!

Take care and Good Hunting!

How heavy a line do you use do you use? heavy line and just horse them in, or light line and finesse them. Probably have to use a leader also. Have any pics of a one day catch?

weyyeager:

We usually use the same fishing pole that we use for big northern pike; normally around 8 to 10 pounds.  Also, use a leader and a weight to get the line out to the the gophers.

You have to remember this was back in my teenage days when we did a vast array of not-so-intelligent things!  LOL!  It's a great way to kill an afternoon and a few pesky gophers.

Treble...  More hooks to attach the peanut butter on.

Now that sounds interesting. The best part is when you get to Gopher another beer. Do Prairie dogs like peanut butter?

They would probably fall into the grass carp catagory being they dont eat meat. probably be real boney, large mouth, with no @$$.  NO CATCH AND RELEASE ALLOWED. Throw them on the bank and let them flop.
