Mont: You're right! That lead bull is going to be a dandy. You can really see his potential in the second photo! Cool pic! Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

Nice pix and very nice elk! Many of you elk hunt often or at least some. I never have been and consider a successful archery elk hunt to be my "dream hunt". One of these days I hope to make that happen.

Kwhitten, You might want to check out our archery hunt in Idaho next year. It looks like a pretty good area and you won't find a much cheaper hunt.

Depending on the dates of that hunt, I may try to go along to video and help out the guys with tags. It will definitely be one heck of a hunt from what I can tell in the posts you have put up on the BB!

I havn't done any figgerin on that but, Your license - A little over $400, Transportation, & food. No guide fees. Bring whatever camping gear you have. Weather shouldn't be too harsh in Sept. but snow is possible. We could probably work something out if you wanted to fly into Billings. If you don't have a tent or camper I'm rounding some up. I'm also working on some horses or mules to help with the dragging.Maybe if we get it figgered out who all is coming we can divvie up the meals. It's all still in the planning. If you drive maybe you can hook up with someone on the way and split costs.

Thanks deadeye, I did read through that other thread. VEEEEEEEEEEERRRRY Interesting. I am giving this one serious thought. I am in SC, so I need to figure out my travel options. If I were to fly in to Billings, I couldn't bring camping gear, just clothes and bowcase. If I drive, I would have to take a couple of weeks off...I will go through all of it and let you guys know. WOW, what a photo tx put up!

I talked to a guy I work with and he's agreed to let me borrow tents. I think I may have the houseing covered. A camper and 5 or 6 tents. The same guy has the mules. I'm trying to just get him to go with.

If it is in September, I may be able to tag along and take my small camper that I could share with one person. Maybe kwhitten could even meet me on the road somewhere and share the ride out and back if we decide to go---just a thought, as I would be on I-80 for quite a way out and back!

Top, that is a great idea and a good possibility! My wife has some outlaws, I mean beloved relatives, that live in Davenport Iowa. I could drive up there and leave the truck there and hook up with you, as I-80 goes right through there! Hummmmmmmmmm... You got room for an extra body in the truck? Sure would like to get my son to come along and with those tents in camp, sleeping would be cared for...third up the fuel from that point... Kent

You wouldn't even need to go near that far West 0n 80, unless you really wanted to. We could meet somewhere in northern Indiana or near the Illinois line and figure out a safe place to leave your truck. I have a shortbed Silverado with only the one seat, so unless your boy is small it would be pretty crowded for the two of you, but we could probably work it out! Right now I would say that it's a go for me because I won't be going out to Wyoming and then on down to New Mexico to hunt with Todd Welch until the middle of October on into the first part of November. Go ahead and start working on your plans because right now I'm close to 100% that we can work it out!

Topgun, Would you take 80 all the way out or would you hop on 90/94 and take that? If you go that way you could hook up with any of my guys from Wis. that may come out. Plus you could leave a vehicle at my parents place on the Wi/Ill. border.

Top,
my 'boy' is a full 6 foot, 30 year old young man! No worries though, we could just hook your camper up to my F-250, park your truck, and motor on. I just thought of Davenport cuz i could leave a truck at a house that would be secure. That would be most handy anyway for us. We would be able to drive to "our" farm in southern Ill and spend the night and then drive on up to Davenport the next day if we wanted to and hook up with you. Second thought, probably would instill goodwill if I actually visited the in-laws some.
Might should just drive straight up there and spend the night. How long does it take to get from there to Idaho, if you have ever been? I just checked the dnr site and tags, permits, licenses, etc total $597 for an elk. Pretty darn reasonable compared to other states' fees. Add another $98 and we can fish all we want!
As you can tell, I am pretty fired up about this. Still got some logistics to work out, but looking good for now.

We could never fit in my Silverado if your "boy" is that big, LOL!!! Anyway, I got to thinking today that I may just take my truck and camper out there early and do some sightseeing, etc. because time is not my enemy since I'm retired! I love to ride horseback and may even take a day or two and book a ride with an outfitter out there in the mountains somewhere. Another possibility is going out the northern route I usually take and visiting friends in Gillette and Worland along with some scouting in the area I hunt every year before going on down to your campsite. Why don't you guys just figure on me going on my own because that way I would not cause anyone problems with my schedule or relying on me for a ride. I can just find my way out to the campsite and help with cooking, scouting, etc. while you younguns do all the hard work of hunting!!! How does that sound? If you go up to the quad cities area and then go out from there it is about 18-19 hours driving time and 1250 miles going out I-80 all the way to western Wyoming and then up along the border on two lane highways to where you are talking about west of Afton. That is also how I would go out to that area if I take the most direct route from Michigan. We went that way on a moose hunt south of Pocatello in 2007 and the roads are all good and it is a very scenic drive the last few hours. When I go out to hunt where I do in northcentral Wyoming we take 80 out to western Iowa and then up 29 to 90 and west through SD and on up over the BigHorns in Wyoming. That trip takes us almost two full days and by the time we get camp set up it is usually close to dark. I think it would be about the same timeframe for you going from the quad cities area on this Idaho hunt. I hope things work out for everyone because I think we could have one heck of a good time whether anyone scores or not!
