bow sounds loud - Thursday, April 17, 2008 11:14 PM ( #1 )
I purchased a Golden Eagle bow in 2000 have used in with very good sucess but I notice it is not very quiet latly should I consider changing the cables ? how long do cables last. I am going to take it to a pro shop and have them look at it. I have replaced the string before but never the cable. would like some opinions before I go in to the pro shop

Bill:

If you haven't changed your cables since 2000 I would seriously consider changing both the string and the cables at the same time.  I would also have a pro shop inspect your bow for any other problems.  Consideration should be given to the cams and wheel bushings/axles and limbs and also the limb mounts on the riser, and the riser itself to make sure your bow isn't damaged in any way.  Serious injury can occur if you overlook a problem area.

Hoyt recommends that you change your string and cables when wear is clearly evident or every two years under normal use conditions.  Some guys -- competitive shooters -- sometimes change their string and cables every year (or even twice a year) depending on how much shooting is done.  Many other manufacturers recommend replacement of the bow string and cables annually.

Get your bow checked out and make sure it's in proper working condition to insure your safety.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Good info guys. I have a Mathews Switchback and it is awesome. It was making a popping noise when I shot it. I took it in and had new cables and a nes string put on and shoots like a champ now. The only thing I hate is having to readjust the sights and seems like evertime I change a the string my bow likes a certian arrow. Right now it shoots 26.5" Easton Excell Carbonaeros the best, last year it was PSE Pro hunters. I have a 27" draw and shoot at 70LBS. So, basically I can tell when the string is stretched out. Good Luck, Make sure you take it to someone who you know does good work.

Thank's for the info never knew how often to check cables just new that the bow did not sound as quiet. It is still shooting accuratly. But now I will have the cables and string changed and any other repairs recommended before I shoot it again. it is funny tho my 2 brothers were always interested in bow hunting. I was always a gun hunter now I am the one that always bow hunts. and when I do go out for shotgun deer season I always us my muzzelloader have not used my shotgun for deer the last 8 years anyway thank you again

I agree with all you guys mentioned . One thing I would add though is get custom pre-streached string and cables . If you go for the in-shop less expensive strings , you will have problems ; strings streach more than most think , unless you like retuning .

WBre573478:

Glad to help.  Bowhunting is addictive!  After shooting my first deer back in '85, I gave up rifle hunting altogether.  I sold all of my guns and now I am strictly a "stick n' string" shooter.  Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against hunting with guns.  Bowhunting just does it for me like nothing else.  I believe bowhunting was in my blood long before I ever picked up a bow.  Don't worry, I'm not going to start chanting or anything like that.

I agree that you should purchase the highest quality of string and cables that you can afford -- pre-stretched is the way to go.  However, I still have stock cables on my Hoyt Vectrix XL, but I believe those cables are also pre-stretched by Hoyt prior to installation.  Haven't had any problems -- knock on wood -- with them so far.

Take care and Good Hunting!

I use the string leeches they seem to work just fine for me and they do not move as they are held between the string.
