Planning on going on a black bear hunt next fall. Looking into Maine right now, wanting to pistol hunt. Any good ideas on where to go?

As some of you may already know, I'm heading up to Manitoba again this coming May -- in 63 days to be exact  -- and I can't wait.  I'll be hunting with Monty McKenzie of McKenzie Outfitters, www.mckenzieoutfitters.ca on a fly-in trophy black bear hunt and fishing adventure.

I cannot say enough good things about Monty.  He is one of the most conscientious outfitters, not to mention, individuals I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know.  He's just a darn good person as well as being a very good outfitter.  That is exactly why I teamed up with Monty to offer the Free Bear Hunt to one of our Talk Forum Members in the Free Bear Hunt/Fishing Adventure Giveaway that we are promoting.  I wanted to align myself with an outfitter who cares not only about his hunting clientèle, but also cares about the animals that we pursue and the future of hunting itself.  And, Monty is the Man!

I'll be documenting my hunt with Monty on our Online Hunt segment, which can be found on the main page of our site.  Hopefully, through my experience(s) you will all have a taste of what one lucky Talk Forum Member will be getting by winning the Free Bear Hunt.

I'll also be heading up to Ontario to pursue trophy black bears this coming fall.  It should be an awesome year.

Best of luck to all bear hunters this spring and fall.  Hunt hard, be safe and share your experiences with us here!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

I'll be heading to northern Minnesota this fall. Went up there in sept. 2006 and shot a nice black bear opening day 45 minutes in the stand at 17yds with my bow. I swapped a turkey hunt for bear and it worked out great! Doing the same deal this year.

There are actually quite a few bears here in Florida but there will probably never be a season.  To many old people that want to just look at them.  One of my buddies had bears chase him all season down here.

Glad to hear you are going swaps. I have done several swaps the pasted 5 or 6 years. It has really worked out good for me. I am able to hunt in alot of different states for less money.  I have made some good friends while doing swaps. I've hunted in Wyoming 3 times. It sure does take a long time to drive thru your state!

After failing to draw a spring tag, I'll have to wait for fall.  Fortunately, I can get 2 OTC tags for that!

I put in for a limited bear tag for Colorado season. It will be my first real serious bear hunt, so any advice would be great. We can't use bait here, so its more of a spot and stalk hunt here.
I talked to several hunters out last year and learned quite a bit from this old guy I ran into on the trail. We had a ton of bear in town this year due to our snow coming in early and they weren't ready for bed yet.

thanks Steve.  probably learned more in the 25 minutes those cubs were at the bait site than I could ever explain.  the body language, the way they just stare right thru you.  know you are there, but have no idea what you are.  their climbing ability.  had one hanging out backwards licking a bait ball.  10 feet off the ground.  being from illinois where the only place to see bears is at either the zoo or soldiers field, have to say, they are amazing critters to see and watch.
when out bear hunting, make sure you are at least faster than the slowest person in your party!!!
