bear hunting

I have always wanted to go bear hunting. I have had bear meat in the past and it is delicious. I would love to get a bear because of the bear fat. It is the traditional fat of choice for Native Americans making pemmican. I have been using beef suet for pemmican but would prefer to get some bear fat. Well maybe someday.

Well, I am still trying to get my bear here in Colorado. We have plenty just think they read the DOW regs, and know when hunting season is. If I get mine I would be glad to express ship you the fat and a few steaks!!
Thank God for this wonderful life and the men and women protecting it for us. You are ALL Heroes!!

pemmican is the dried meat/fruit/fat traveling/survival food that the Native Americans carried with them. it is made with shredded jerky, fruit like dried cherries or blueberries anf fat and it will keep forever and was a source of fat energy during winter and periods of lean meat.

You really like the bear meat??? I have tried it on three occassions, and only liked it on one. Do you know if it tastes better in the spring or fall? Not sure if that matters, but the one time i liked it, it was the spring. Jim

sdwolfden thanks, I never knew that. Jim the few times I've had it it was prepared with a strong type flavoring. One time it was in chili and one time it was made with sloppy joe mix. Both times if I was told it was deer, beef, elk, etc I dont think it would make a difference but it was good...

one thing you might want to keep in mind,if your going to freeze it for a period of time make sure to remove all the outside fat when butchering, otherwise the meat will have a really strong bad taste to it.thats my own opinion. tom

Marie Do like I'm doing... save for Newfoundland Ca for bear. The biologist say they have the biggest body masses and a "propensity" towards hugh bears. The avg bear taken there is 250lbs vs 175 in quebec and maine. I've actually done quite a bit of research on this and I think I'm sure of where and with which guide I'm going with

I have had bear meat that was not very good, to much fat in the meat. Can't believe you want the fat from it to eat.

Never been bear hunting but would love to give it a try. Putting in this year for bear in Michigan. It's the lottery thing so I might not get drawn. I will let you know if I do!

In my experience with 3 bears, you want to consume the meat in about 3 months or the meat becomes very strong. I think the natural fat in the meat continues to grow strong even frozen. So my bears were enjoyed by meself and friends within the 3 month period.
