another grandkid becomes a successful hunter - Saturday, April 23, 2011 10:01 PM ( #1 )
Took grandkids out today for sum shootin' time ... wuz s'posed to be prairie dog huntin' but the weather hasn't cooperated here much, so we drove around lookin' for gophers and muskrats ...

Grandson (#4) had a couple of chances @ 'rats ... usin' the Charger, becuz I thot it easier for him, bein' smallish, as well as left-eyed ... tooken him three tries & he winged the first one (and it struggled a bit, then swam away), distance 50 yards-plus ... he had trubble seein' the second one in the reeds/grasses on the slushy ice, but when he found it, first two shots a bit high, third lower, fourth wuz fatal ... distance: about 75 yards ... perty decent, for a handgun (even with the bipod) and a mere .22 ... (yes, shootin' 'rats is legal in Nodak until May 8, .22 or .410 only, and they's a bit more than a pest with their undermining roads with tunnels and such, sum counties are nearly @ a point of payin' a bounty for shooters)

(Also, yes, we wuz careful with direction & whut lies beyond-type shot selection ... no screamin' ricochets off into space or the neighbors' cows ...)

Granddaughter (#2) joined us @ the break, we only saw one more critter, a gopher alongside the road, she wuzn't able to use the bipod and merely scared it a bit, so it ran ... TOWARDS US ... and it wuz so close she couldn't find it very easily in the 'scope, and missed again ...

After drivin' around a bit more, we went to the range, where they both did very well @ 25 yards, scorin' a 48/50 no "x" (him), a 48/50 3x (her) ... they had fun, and are ready for the next huntin' season ...

He's only 10, so won't be able to hunt deer for a couple of years, but is already plannin' on dogs later this summer, and geese this fall ... she's nearly 14 and ready for her second season of huntin' deer (got her first one last fall), dunno if she wants to pursue much more ...

All in all, a fun day with the kids ...
