@ Youngsters Drop the Hammer - Monday, December 12, 2011 4:58 PM ( #1 )
To start off, my folks came down the first week of Nov and brought my niece to hunt with me. Deer hunting was horrible, she had a sm 6pt in front of her several times and had a good doe, but could not get on her fast enough to get a shot off. That Wed night, I took her and my dad hog hunting. My dad had a good group comoe in right at dark, but opted not to take a shot. Said it was too dark. I think it is more he did not want to clean any animals. When he shoots a deer, he makes ph calls for someone else to come and clean it for him.  LOL!!! My niece and I saw nothing. The next night we went back to try again. We had a couple of good boars playing cat and mouse with us for over an hr. Finall, they came into some hand corn and she earholed one. I mean through and through, ear to ear, Dropped it in it's tracks. Last Sat I took my son out. He held off during the deer season from shooting any deer cause he wanted to shoot a hog first for his b-day. We got in the stand about 3:30 after doing some target shooting and making sure he was on. He had been at it all day and actually fell asleep for about a half hr. About 4:50, I saw the first of many hogs. I nudged him and woke him up. Told him to get ready, cause the hogs were here. He saw the first group and they were some big ones. He got to shaking so bad, I had to grab the gun from him. He said he was so excited and scared at he same time. He had never seen hogs in the wild like that before. About 5:15, we had another group come in from the north and walk down a small wood finger behind us. One came out and spotted us in the ladder stand, but could not smell us as we had NNE winds. He moved around every way trying to bust us but we sat motionless and he finally had enough and went back the same way he came. 10 min's later, we had a lg group come in to corn. I told my son to pick one out, aim for the ear and squeeze one off. He tried and tried, but they kept moving. I didn't think he would ever shoot. It was getting to the point I thought I would have to light them up and "BANG, DOWN". He dropped the hammer. DRT. I was so happy and proud, I almost fell out of the stand. We got down and went over to check out his hog. He was at this point, shaking again, not believeing he actually shot one. I think he beat his chest so much that night, it's bruised now. LMAO!!!!!! He is still talking about it. I told him if he ever lost that feeling, it was time to hang it up. I am one happy and proud dad of my son.

Thanks guys. Since he shot that hog with a .22 hornet, he has been after me to try and find one for him. I looked and looked on all of the gun networks I could find and was having issues with what I was seeing. 650 was the cheapest I could find and that was in a Rem 700. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, no!!!!!! Well I went by my buddy Mike's last night and he gave me a Ruger M77 in .22 hornet for my boy to try out. The only thing Mike told me was I could not have the scope. How about that folks. I owe him big time for this.

Willie,
Kill'em as fast as you can and as many as you can right away or they will take over in a very short time.

Funny you mention a 22 hornet!  I was just into one of my safes a couple days ago and pulled out the Savage Model 219 break action 22 Hornet that was one of the guns I brought back after Dad and I hunted with you.  He had told me it wouldn't fire, so I just put it away and hadn't messed with it at all.  Anyway, I hit the lever to open it and noticed the firing pin was still in the "shot" position.   I figured it should have cocked when I opened it, so I moved the lever back to the right further than what it had taken to open the action and it cocked.  I closed it up, squeezed the trigger, and bingo!  I did that two more times and it fired both times, so I don't know if that's the way it's supposed to work or whether the lever just isn't working quite right.  Anyway, as long as it will cock I'm going to take it out with the box of 35 grain Hornady V Max shells that came with it and see what it will do.  It's in excellent shape and has a 3x9x32mm scope of unknown origin on it that appears to be pretty good with a nice duplex reticle.  I hope it will be a decent shooter because I'm thinking it will be perfect to shoot groundhogs and yotes down here in southern MI.  The attached picture is off the net and it looks just like the one in this picture.
