Wisconsin DNR: Wolves Kill 4 Dogs in Last Week See More News addthis_pub = 'stuartanderson'; addthis_offset_left = -110; 7/13/2009 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials said that wolves are responsible for killing four hunting dogs in Clark, Ashland and Oneida counties last week. DNR Wildlife Biologist John Dunn said that the attacks happen when bear hunters start training their dogs or when dogs accidentally run into a wolf den, according to the Chicago Tribune. Dunn warns hunters not to train dogs in an area where a wolf pack is known to live, but says prevention of these types of accidents can be difficult. Western Great Lakes gray wolves remain on the federal endangered species list and cannot be killed. Now either that is one hell of a big pack to cover 3 counties, or there is more than they think or are telling people. Don't train your dogs where wolves are known to be? What's next, don't walk or hunt where wolves are known to be? #@#@@@$#@$#@$#@$#@#$@ sh--. Practice the 3 S's and go on.

Those packs are very agressive up there. Over in Iron co. we haven't had any trouble at all with wolves and we know we have been mixed right in with them. Every year dogs get killed up in those countys. Don't run your dogs where the wolves are? That's Wis. They are everywhere. I seen a wolf while I was there. I seen 1-wolf, 1-bear, 1-skunk, and 1-racoon. Not 1 deer in the whole state.

Just north of Merrill, Wisconsin in Lincoln County -- where I was born and raised -- a lot of bird hunting dogs were getting killed by wolves in the New Wood Area. This was back in the 80s and 90s. There is a pack of Timber wolves that roam that area. In fact, I laid eyes on one in broad daylight while I was driving down Hwy M where it meets Hagger City Road. The wolf just stood on the side of the road and stared back at me. I remember going into the woods to bow hunt in the dark one early morning in that same general area. While walking toward one of my stands that sat deep in the woods, I decided -- at the last second -- to hunt another stand that overlooked a productive oak patch. I quickly veered off of the logging road and onto the trail that lead to the closer stand. Just as I was putting my foot on the first screw-in tree step, a pack of wolves started howling! And, they were close! Had I chosen the other stand deeper in the woods I would have been right in the middle of them. Their howls were extremely unsettling. The hairs on the back of my neck stood straight up. It was creepy even sitting 25 feet in the air! Those wolves were definitely killing something, and they were in the process of running it down, whatever it was. After the sun came up, NOTHING moved; not a bird, not a squirrel, not a deer. I've never seen anything like it. It was a strange day. Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

I wonder what will be said when a person is attacked by wolves?? It was a very bad idea to re-introduce these predators. I wonder if PETA and the other "fruit of the looms" understand how many different animal populations are being degraded by the wolves. Some people just don't have a fricking clue.

Steve, In the first of those posts, it was bad to see Clam Lake. That is where the elk herd is and if people think the wolves will not do real damage to the herd there, they are sadly mistaken. I did not know that they were doing that much damage so few yrs ago already. Thanks for the info.

Gary: You're welcome. No prob. Yeah, if Wisconsin doesn't pay very close attention those wolves will literally decimate the elk herd that the state has protected for all of these years. Just go ask some outfitters out in Idaho and parts of Montana what wolves will do to the elk population. Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

I know what you mean Steve. I have heard alot of stories from the guys out there. I even know of a guy from WY that works for the fish and game dept that yr before last, shot 51 of them and let them lay. My kind of control for elk and muley herds. There was also a wolf/dog confrontation 1 mile south of my place last yr. in central Wi.
