Wild fire - Friday, September 04, 2009 8:51 AM ( #1 )
I woke up yesterday to a house full of smoke. A lightning strike started a fire a couple miles away. Didn't worry me too much until I discovered the ranches that I just got permission to hunt elk were in the path. I got home from work this morn to find my archery elk season went up in smoke. Now I have a special archery tag and nowhere to hunt.

Oh, man, that really sucks!!  Sorry to hear that!
I know it ain't no consolation, but at least the fire was caused by Nature, not by some idiot like the LA wildfire that killed 2 firemen.

I heard that, that little storm came thru and started 4 fires in the area. I guess they will have this one contained in 2 or 3 days, so they say.
Back to the old public ground and stand on the fence to watch the elk on the private ground.

I found out that the info I got on the ranches may be wrong. Have to take a ride and find out. If I'm lucky maybe all the elk will be pushed onto the property. I can only hope. Ussually things don't work out that good for me. There will probably be 200 head on the ranch and they won't let me hunt for fear of a fire getting started. Ranchers are a little nervous around here durring fire season.

They pretty much have it under control now. I went and glassed the hills that I could see from the road but no elk on the ranches.

Hunting has been a roller coaster ride so far. Check out my post on the whitetail thread.

Thanx Shadow. I went back out to hang a stand in the tree I sat in last nite. The whole time I was listening for the crows to tell me where it was but apparently they couldn't find him either. I wondered around for another hour looking for it but no luck. What I did find was alot of elk sign in that section just south of my stand. Gonna have to do some more exploring and find some more stand locations. I did find a few possibility's. Something good out of it.

I think I have a pretty good shot at an elk. Talking to the landowner and she said they had, I ferget now, I think she said 14 different bulls hanging out on their property. Not that I really care. If I get a shot at a cow I'll take it. I just hope a bull shows first.
