Why They Erk Me - Wednesday, August 17, 2011 7:24 PM ( #1 )
Forgive me Steve, but this has my dander up. This is a post from my bow hunting site and it irritates me to no end. The excuses some make to use them and to try and justify why they use them really erks me. The part that really gets me is in bold.

" Cross bows are great to shoot and harvest game. Been hunting with a cross bow three season's now. I still use my compound but when I know there's a big buck hanging around it's the last day of bow season or I need to fill an unused doe tag, I pull out the cross bow. My shots are 18 yards or less. Complete pass through shots with mechanical BH's. Old Ten point Betsy has never failed me. See my photo album for a picture of last year's buck taken with my ten point.

If you are not proficient in the use of a reg vert bow, don't make excuses for using a x-bow. I will welcome anyone forced to use one to stay in the woods with the rest of us due to not being able to use a vert bow or are in your prime yrs to where you can't use a vert bow anymore, but please, don't insult the rest of us that take pride in our sport and our dedication to it with excuses as to why you choose to use one.

Again, sorry Steve for the rant.

No apologies necessary; I feel the same way.

If a person is physically unable to pull back a regular bow, I can understand someone using a crossbow, but I guess I just don't understand why a true bowhunter would choose a crossbow over a normal longbow, recurve or compound.

I, mean, isn't the appeal and accomplishment of hunting with archery equipment found in the challenge of actually hunting with archery equipment?

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Re:Why They Erk Me - Thursday, August 18, 2011 5:55 AM ( #3 )
The site I am on is strictly a bow site and they started a thread for x-bows. All of the posts I read on there really p me off. Here are a bunch of what were suppose to be hard core bowhunters talking about how good they can shoot them and how they will use them in a pinch, down to the wire, need some meat hunts. If you are a hardcore bowhunter, why even contemplate their use? (Lazy, worthless excuses) WTH? Wish the heck Tx would have never made them legal for use during the bow season except for people with dissabilities or seniors still wanting to hunt. If you want to use one during the gen season, go for it, just not during thebow season and call urself a bowhunter. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Dander is up again.....................LMAO!!!!!  Sorry for the rant folks.

Rant all you want Gary, LOL!  I really don't give a chit what they use as long as it's legal and they use it properly and kill game, rather than wound it.  If they aren't disabled, we all know why they are using them and that's because it doesn't take any amount of use to be proficient with them.  Even Jim Shockey uses one on his show now and then to plug another sponsor, but so far I don't think he has said he trusts his life to it like about very other thing he uses, including his TP, LOL!!!  I just think there are too many other things in life to worry about than using crossbows during regular bow season and I don't think they have proliferated enough to cause season changes, etc.  I will admit that at one time I had the same attitude about them as you and Steve have expressed, but I finally said screw it because I can't change others philosophies!  We basically went through the same thing when compounds came about and then it was inline MLs and now these dohickys!  It's probably my age now more than anything where I just want to smell the roses and the heck with others if it isn't interfering with me, LOL!!!   If you guys really want to hunt primitive, go onto the website the Wensels and Mike Mitten are running and buy their books and DVDs.  I've been keeping in touch with Mike since our bear hunt with Monty and those guys are the true hunters and their DVDs are what I think you all would like.  It's about the experience and being with and part of nature and not the kill itself.  Buy their two "Primal" videos and you won't regret it as the photography in both of them is breath taking.  The latest is over 2 hours long and has a bonus video thrown in for $26, including S/H.  I don't think Steve will have a problem if I give the website and if he does he can delete this last part of my post.  The site is:  www.brothersofthebow.com   Those guys are my idea of true outdoorsmen!!!

Agreed Top, it aint about the killing that does it for me. It's the experience of being with good friends and meeting new ones. Animals are just a bonus. I do not like the fact that these knotheads are actually trying to justify themselves as serious bowhunters.

I can understand that viewpoint.  You guys should at least buy that latest video I mentioned to see not only the scenery, but there's a ton of big whitetails on it too!

Top:

Got both vids and Mike's book.  I read one of Mike's articles in North American Whitetail many years ago about how he hunted Illinois whitetails from dawn until dusk.  That article in NAW is the very reason I now sit in my own tree stand from dawn until dusk when hunting whitetails.

As far as crossbows go; I don't have a problem with someone using a crossbow as long as it is legal, but I have to admit lazy people do bother me.  If you want to be a bowhunter then hunt with a bow, not a crossbow.  The thing that bothers me the most is that nowadays people always want the "easy way out."  In my honest opinion, if any task requires any type of work at all these days, 70 to 80% of the population will simply give up.  It's an epidemic trend.  I have never seen so many lazy people in my entire lifetime and it is only getting worse.  The innate values of a "hard day's pay for a hard day's work" has gone by the wayside.  Now, the mentality is: Let me see how little I can do and still get paid the same amount.  That basically translates into: Let me find the easy way out or let me use a crossbow during bow season.

Basically, my last paragraph pretty much sums up exactly why our country is in the mess that it is in today.  And, that is exactly why I have such a problem with the use of crossbows during bow season by so-called "bowhunters".

Take care and Good Hunting!

I can't argue with a single thing you said Steve.  The last couple younger generations have been given so much for doing nothing that it's an epidemic just like you mentioned and unfortunately I don't see  it getting any better in my lifetime!  Other than the disabled using a crossbow, I would guess that the largest percentage of people using them is exactly as you stated---pure laziness!

Amen to that!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a couple of pic's for y'all, taken at Gander Mountian today and it will solidify all prior posts. If y'all can find a legit reason for these 2 doing this besides laziness and not knowing a dog gone thing, I'm all ears.

Re:Why They Erk Me - Sunday, August 21, 2011 7:16 PM ( #10 )
Here are the pic's from earlier today at GM. This 50 some yr old lady in come ---k me stileto heels is standing there holding a heavy Ghilie suit. Now mind you, it has been over 100 deg here for over a month. (Ghilie suit, really)  Her husband or whatever he is is there with one of those hard x-bow cases w/wheels. Doubtfull if he has ever drawn a bow, but now that he has a x-bow, will call himself a bowhunter. In the second pic, you can see the woman just a bit better and get the idea why it had me po'ed and has me po'ed ever since they allowed them to be used down here. They were a perfect pr, him in his knickers and Polo shirt and her in her heels ready for the pole.  LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sorry again for the rant, but I had to do it.

Just like the multiple gun gun cases that have the wheels. In the infamous words of Paul Harvey, "Now you know the rest of the story, Good Day".

My short tenure with GM, I can sadly say that no woman came to my firearms counter in stilletto heels!!!  THANKFULLY, no man, either!
Wheeled cases????  Puhleeezzzzee...I'm with Steve, sick to my stomach....They just approved crossbows during regular gun season, not bow...yet....And of course, NY Bowhunters (fighting against the inclusion) are a "bunch of cry babies" or eliteists (I'm a life member of NY Bowhunters)...
