oldguy - I got a 5yr old yellow lab and can honestly say that it is the best dog with my kids. But heaven help you if you knock on the door and want to come in, he'll kill you if I'm not around. Very protective of the wifey and kids.
Been hunting him since he was1 and there is no quit in him until the ride home. Then he's out cold! LOL

Oh yeah, to answer the original ? yes my lab works the fields just as good as the water.

Mike - it's funny you mention that. Livin in NC now for almost 2 yrs and this is the first time
I had snow down here. The dog and my little girl had a blast playing in it for the day!
Sometimes I really miss that stuff. Growing up in NY we always had snow, and lots of it.
Winter can really suck sometimes but if you have winter sports like ice fishing and stuff
it isn't so bad.

I have had a dozen different breeds growing up, some breed for hunting some not but without a doubt the best overall breed that I have ever had and would highly recommend is the Labrador Retreiver. Not only a great hunting dog but a perfect family pet for kids and as gentle and loving a four legged friend that you will ever find.

I have a German shorthair and would not advise one unless you have a lot of time for training, and not if you want to have it for a house pet. They are way too wired. Alot of character though.

I previously posted that my next dog would probably be a weim - well, it's a chocolate lab!
I decided I wasn't ready for such a high strung dog, so I went with what I already know.
She's already doing great, and by this fall I should be one happy hunter!

Labs are great dogs. Both with kids and in general. I wouldn't get another dog unless it was a lab, any color.

I agree - went with the choc this time, because I've never had one (but almost went home with a yellow, instead)
in any color, tho, I love labs!

Nice Shorthair deadeye, pretty talented too. I've got a 6 month old pup I'm just starting to work with on birds, this is the age that they get kind of boneheaded but she is doing pretty good. I stop as soon as she shows any sign of inattention. She is usually getting worn out by then anyway. Hopefully I have her ready to hunt hard by quail season.
