Due to time constraints, it looks like it'll be just here in Oregon for me this year.
Next year, though, I already have a muzzleloader hunt for Washington planned - combo Roosevelt elk and blacktail deer.  And, maybe it will be Cali for pigs, too.

I wish I was hunting elk in ANY state or province this year.  However, the whitetails and bear have me too busy, but next year I'm going to make some time to chase an elk around the mountains, that's for sure!

Best luck to all of you going after elk this season.  Hard hard and be safe!  And, be sure to share your experiences with all of us.  If I can't go elk hunting myself at least I'll be able to live vicariously through your elk hunting adventures.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Colorado Elk...as usual
I have that slight advantage of living here in this great state with elk in my back yard.
BUT... if anyone ever wants to hunt some public land with me and my boys... your always welcome to tag along and I'd be glad to take you up on my turf.

I won't be going anywhere this year either so I guess the only chance I'll have for huntin' elk will be if I get drawn in the elk lotto here in Michigan.

I'm not counting on it happening though,.. I've been trying since it started in 1986 and nothing yet.

Hopefully I'll be going out to Wyoming in 2009 if I can draw a general tag with 2 preference points.

I'm serious about the hunt guys... if you ever want to venture out to Colorado and do some public land hunting... I'm always willing to share my camp.
I wish I could say I owned a butt load of private land to offer out... but I just do the public land and do my best to scout in the off season as much as possible.
I have horses now, so hoping to get back even futher in this year with some help from my 4 legged friends.

Hopefully AZ for archery bull elk - find out first week of next month if I'm drawn or not.  On my fifth attempt at a tag here.

Still haven't finalized plans yet for a WY archery antelope hunt for this year, will probably do that in July.

Will be in TN in Nov for a archery/muzzleloader boar hunt

And of course PA for spring turkey, bear, whitetail and hopefully Elk here as well(also on my 5th try for a tag here).

good luck to everyone in the draws and on your hunting this year.

thats a REAL nice offer, I'll seriously thiink about taking you up on that next year.

The way you said "colorado elk...as usual" it almost sounding like you were saying it like it's a bad thing. I guess when you hunt the same area it becomes the norm but to others its great. When I went to Wy the guys there were amazed that we went tuna fishing and shark fishing regularlly. We took it for granted-they were amazed. Just like to them us going for antelopes was kinda ho-hum but we'd do that again tomorrow. Just what your used to... hey I'm sure someone is tired of "dating" some models!

Mike that's a hell of an offer,... I'm gonna' keep that feather tucked in my hat and could very well take you up on it in the future. I've got a bunch of irons in the fire right now and need to see how they all are going to play out.

That is a heck of an offer Mike! I might have to take you up on that next year or so! I have to get off my lazy butt & get a Hunter Education card so I can hunt in Colorado. Kind of irks me that I'm 53 years old, hunted since I was a little kid, & still have to go sit in a classroom for two days, just so I can hunt in Colorado. Enough whining!
I'm going Elk hunting in Unit 10 of Idaho. Be there for the rifle opener on Oct.10. I'll be going with a couple of guys from Maryland that I met on a Muzzleloader hunt there in 2005. They are driving out there, & will stop & pick me up in Indiana. I can't wait! A nice road trip without kids, & then the hunt. Hopefully that trip back will have lots of war stories being told about either the big one we got, or the big one that got away! Good luck to everyone, & be sure to share your hunting stories!

Welcome aboard DGR,..

So your going to unit 10 in Idaho huh,... I was just out that way in October 2007 (10-A / Clearwater) things were mighty SLOW last year.  Saw more free ranging dairy cows than
elk last season.

The locals are blaming the poor conditions on the drought,.. along with the increased wolf populations,... those big boy's don't even bugle anymore. It's like ringing the dinner bell out there.

Hope things improve for your trip out that way,.. beautiful countryside though !

Thanks 7MM Magnum! You posted a couple of pictures for me of the Clearwater area on the NAHC BB last year, one being a picture of an Elk track, & another looks like your avatar. I know I'll have a great time no matter what, as it's the hunt I love, & the kill is just icing on the cake! After eating Elk tag soup (tastes the same as Whitetail tag, & turkey tag) from my 2005 Muzzleloader hunt, I'm ready to pop a cap on one this time with a rifle, although weather conditions, & those friggin wolves might have something to say about it.  I'll hunt hard & have a great time. Not sure exactly where in Unit 10 we will be, but I'm thinking it's not too far from the Montana border. I'm in good shape as far as equipment goes, & the only major thing I still need to get is a rangefinder. I'll get that fairly soon here as I want to get well versed in it's usage prior to the hunt. I'd like to pick up a GPS, but it won't be a necessity, so that might wait till next year. I failed to mention before that this hunt is with an Outfitter, the same one I used for my Muzzleloader hunt. This will probably be my last guided hunt for Elk, as I would rather do it myself once I'm familiar enough with the critters I'm hunting. The Elk GT at Dworshak (?) that da critter slayer puts on sounds like something I could definitely get into!

Yeah Greg,... I remember you.

I've had my share lately of tag soup myself,.. I DON'T like it !

I hunted REAL hard last fall out there,... most times I was the last into camp and when I got there everyone else was already in and most of them had already eaten there dinners !!

I still had a great time,.. I always do when I'm out in the woods huntin'. It was just a little disappointing not to see much for all the time and energy I expended.

I can't blame brother Ray,.. he has no control over the critters and does try to point you in the right directions based on the most current information. He does put on one hell of a camp, and it's so great to meet all of the others and put faces and personalities to the names you know of. Everyone I have met out there were top notch people and hunters alike. Some just hunt harder than others for whatever their reasons. I would highly recommend that if you get the chance to,.. do attend one and make your further hunting plans based on what you experience there. I know I'll be back,... over and over as time and $$ allow me to. I was going to attend in 09' but I'm going to give the Wyoming hills a try. I'll purchase a preference point this July when they go on sale and another in 09 when I put in for a try for a tag,.. we'll see what happens.

This year is open for me so I'm going to try once again at the Michigan elk draw and see what happens there,.. got my fingers crossed with 3 PP's. I'm not holding my breath though.

Good luck to you in your try this year out there,...

RE: Where is everyone hunting? - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 12:18 AM ( #17 )
for those going to idaho this year, the weather has been great for the drought.  been keeping up on the weather reports for my bear hunt out there, and there are places, clearwater basin, that have had 200% of average for snow this year.  and with the triangle states delisting the wolves, that may help also in the upcoming years.

one heck of an offer for the colorado hunt.  might have to think about that, especially if there are horses to help get my old butt up in the mountains.
when out bear hunting, make sure you are at least faster than the slowest person in your party!!!

Steve,
Delta is only 3 hours from me. Are you hunting an over the counter tag or Draw? or Outfitter? Never hunted over there YET. Lots of nice area over there.
Thank God for this wonderful life and the men and women protecting it for us. You are ALL Heroes!!

I would presume that Steve would either be buying an over-the-counter tag or a landowner tag if he is going in 2009.  You wouldn't even put in for the 2009 draw until a year from now.
