What a shame we have to worry about all this crap cause of lazy slobs/thieves/perps (aka hunters)!!!  I've been "blessed" that I haven't had any tresspassers on my land (only 10 acres, not posted, yet...have to have a survey done for property lines).  We just bought in '07, I have found "old" surveyers tape for trail markers, but so far so good.
I remember in my bow hunter safety class what one instructor said....in NY, there is no such thing as "unowned" property!  Just because it ain't posted, someone owns it.  It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out who owns it before you hunt it!!  Simple thing to remember!

Shadow,... your 100% correct!

I isn't the landowners responsibility,... here in Michigan I've got 80 acres to keep track of.
The way are laws work, ignorance will work for you 1 time,.. after you've been warned off
and you return you will be prosecuted!!

The majority of our acreage is in hay for our horses, another 15 is normally corn and I've
got a new 10 acre food plot I'm putting in with a nice apple tree in the center of it.

I did post my property about 7 years ago. The neighbor to the back of my property line
didn't like the fact I posted signs up so his answer was to tear down the whole south fence line !
He and his friends had been caught by me hunting my south end. Go figure,... his 180 acres isn't
enough for him I guess. The only thing I've got going he doesn't is timber on about 12 acres on my
southeast corner.

Well that didn't set real well with me as it was my fence also,.. had been there since the dawn
of time from the looks of it. So I got the law on him,.. they paid him a visit to his home and let him
know that I WAS putting a fence back up and reposting it!! If anything happened to that one he'd
be going to jail!

Topgun: I'm headed over to check out your post as soon as this one gets posted.

It really does help to be observant any time you're out and about.  If you see anything that looks suspicious you can always jot down a license plate number, etc. and if something happens down the line have it to help catch a violator.  COs have such big areas to work and so many things they are responsible for that we need to help them whenever we can!

maybe a little late with this response and i know it is unique situation that i live in.  here in the Black Hills Fire District, all land is considered open to use unless it is specifically posted with "No Trespassing" signs.  it is an exception to the state laws concerning trespassing.  this is because of the constant fire danger in the area and gives access to fire crews without question.  i have never seen so many "No trespassing " sign as when i moved out here.  now i know the reason why and it really makes sense in this situation.

There is no such thing as "too late of a response" on here.   Thanks for posting your comment.

You gotta love the saying, "good fences make good neighbors"  Guess its not true in some cases.  Seems the more you put up to dicern your little plot of land, the more these idjits seems to get all bent out of shape.

When i was growing up we have a nice plot on the lide of a mountain, with a long view goind down the side.  We had the best access too.  it was posted along our property line bordering this wilderness.  yet people kept trying to take deer on our land.  Finally my dad posted cameras and posted signs saying it was video monitored.  That sure solved the problem really quick lol

TLC, my father caught a neighbor boy and a buddy of his trespassing on my Dad's place during turkey season a few years ago.  They were on an ATV and the neighbor boy took off and left his friend to take the fall.  My Dad picked up the kid and drove to the neighbor's house a mile or so away.  He told the kid's mom what had happened.  The mother actually handed my father the kid's gun and told him to keep it until he wanted to give it back.  My father refused and said the discipline was their issue.(I wish more parents nowadays were like that and not the "NOT MY CHILD!" kind.)

Anyway, my father said to the boy, in front of his mother, "Next time I catch you on my place I will either shoot you or prosecute you and I will decide which on the spot!"  I think the words, "Fear of God" are very apropos in this situation.  He never saw him on his place again and even got a hand written Christmas card from the boy the next year.

If your going to do the ammo can thing and are worried about someone taering up your camera you could always buy a cheap trail camera I know wal mart around here has them for like 65 bucks so that would be a solution to that the camera's may not be digital but 35mm will get the job done!!

I would take the stand and leave a note saying thanks for the stand and let them know if they wanna leave a few trail cams for me as well that would be great.
Looks like that is a bit of money and not too easy to replace. from the news I know that there are individuals out there that get dangerous when they get caught or just made fun of. I remember the shooting in wisconsin over a tree stand on private land where 6 hunters were killed-

The weekend shootings of a group of deer hunters in northwestern Wisconsin claimed a sixth life Monday, hospital officials and the man's family said.
Five others died in the immediate aftermath of the shootings Sunday afternoon, which Sawyer County Sheriff James Meier said were sparked by a dispute over a tree stand on the first weekend of Wisconsin's deer hunting season.
Denny Drew, 55, was one of three hunters who initially survived the shootings in rural Sawyer County. A family statement said he died Monday evening after being transferred from Lakeview Medical Center in nearby Rice Lake to a hospital in Marshfield, about 120 miles from the scene of the shooting.
"The family is requesting privacy as they deal with this very public tragedy," said the statement, which a hospital official read to CNN. "The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the community for their heartfelt support during this very difficult time."
A suspect is in custody -- 36-year-old Chai Wang of St. Paul, Minnesota -- but no formal charges have been filed against him, Meier told reporters.
"This is an incredible tragedy," Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle said. "One in which a great family tradition like a deer hunt has turned into such a great loss for the families involved. The whole state of Wisconsin feels the deepest sympathy and pain."
The shootings occurred after a hunter returning to a rural cabin saw a man in a deer stand, a platform built in a tree to give hunters a better view, on private property. The hunter radioed someone to ask about the man's presence there.
Meier said the man had apparently been hunting, gotten lost and stopped a couple of hunters to ask for directions. He wandered onto 400 acres of private land.
The other hunter "approached the person and asked him to leave, at which time the landowners and the occupants of the cabin came on the scene. The suspect got down from the deer stand, walked approximately 40 yards, fiddled with his rifle in some way ... turned and opened fire on the group," Meier said. He said it appeared some of the targeted hunters tried to fire back.
When other hunters appeared on the scene, they also were hit by gunfire, Meier said. Some of the people suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The shooter used an SKS 7.62 mm semiautomatic rifle, the sheriff said.
Two bodies were found near each other, and the others were found over an area of about 100 yards, he said.
