Tred Barta paralyzed

Tred Barta, love him or hate him, has suffered a possible stroke. Here is what was quoted on his sport fishing forum: "On his way to Alaska to tape his TV show, Tred Barta suffered a rare occurrence called a spinal stroke affecting his T2-T10 vertebrae. Since there are only 12 of these Thoracic bones, that’s a very large area. He is currently paralyzed from just below the chest down. Prognosis is way up in the air at the moment. Some medicos predict permanent paralysis while others have given him up to a 60-percent chance of at least partial recovery. His message to everyone is… Don’t take a single second of your life for granted." Please join me in prayers for he and his family in their time of need!
Love playing that string music and sending a Muzzy flying!

Tred lives close to me and has much experience in the woods and the water. You are quite correct, as they saying goes...whether you love him or hate him.... I do not wish this type of illness or injury on anyone. My prayer's and thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time...

Ever since the inception of his tv show, I have alawys liked Tred. He has some unorthodox methods at times and his arrogance takes over alot of other times but he is a good outdoorsman. I like the fact that he does it "HIS" way and does not follow the "norm" so to speak of what the rest of the community would have him do. One of his best shows I think was an elk hunt outside of Vail, Colorado. He did his homework, was able to find that one small spot where he could access public land, despite I'm sure, alot of looks from the locals upity ups and got in and hunted. He and Dan Harrington have made a good couple when it comes to hunting and doing the shows. Good luck to him and his family and knowing what I do know about him, he wil bounce back just fine. He will continue to do it the "Barta Way"

I really liked his show when I could get it on my cable package. He was boisterous, bragged a whole bunch, bossy and did things the "Hard way, the Barta way!" But he had the records and such to back up his claims. I hope he pulls through this quickly!

The guy is just plain good at what he does for the most part in regards to fishing. Also, anyone who limits themselves to the primitive bow and comes away having a good time without much success is my kind of guy. He can be a little uppity, but bless his heart, I like the darn guy and I hope he has a full recovery!!!

I feel the same way as tex,.. gotta' love his "my way" style. I've always liked his TV shows where some find him a little ruff on the edges,.. I think he's a diamond in the ruff. We're all prayin' for ya' Tred !

I hope he pulls through this. I think he's stubborn and tough enough to. I've been watching him for years, everyone is right "like him or hate him" not much in between. I don't always agree with him but I do like how he is true. He shows his misses and bad shots, he doesn't edit them out. Whatever happens on the hunt, that's what you see. I'm pretty sure that not alot of hunting shows can honestly say the same thing. Anyways, I wouldn't wish this kind of trajedy to anyone. My heart goes out to him and his family.

Barta hopes for return to Beaufort after suffering stroke Tred Barta plants a smooch on his wife, Anni, at last year’s year’s Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament. Anni will serve in his place as host should Barta not recover sufficiently from a recent stroke. (Dylan Ray photo) NEWS-TIMES Published: Friday, May 29, 2009 3:08 PM EDT TRED BARTA BEAUFORT — As he walked down the Beaufort Town Docks after the festivities had ended on the final night of last year’s Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament, Tred Barta remarked, “I think this is the No. 1 accomplishment of my life.” If he is able to overcome a spinal stroke that fell the 57-year-old last week, Barta may have a new item to place at the top of his list of notable accomplishments. The record-setting hunter and fisherman, author, pilot and noted hunting and fishing television show host of the Versus Network’s “The Best and Worst of Tred Barta” had packed his bags to travel to Alaska to film the season’s final episode when he began to lose feeling in his left leg. Within four hours, he had completely lost feeling in both legs up to a point halfway between his chest and navel. The same way a cerebral stroke blocks blood to a portion of the brain, a spinal stroke occurs when blood stops flowing to a portion of the spinal cord. Spinal cord stroke is among the rarest forms of strokes — 1.2 percent of all strokes. The overall annual incidence of spinal cord strokes is estimated to be only 12 strokes in 100,000 people. “This is a tough thing, but Tred isn’t feeling sorry for himself,” said Jim Bailey, former tournament director of the Cap’n Fannie’s Billfish Tournament who co-founded the Boys and Girls Tournament with Barta in 2004. “I talked to him a few days ago, and you wouldn’t have known a thing is wrong. He is probably as upbeat and a ‘glass half full’ kind of a guy as I have ever known in my entire life. “He is just amazing. He called me and left me a message after it happened and spoke like it was just another day. The message said, ‘Hey buddy, what’s going on? How are things? Just calling to check in on you.’ ” That remarkable attitude is already paying dividends for Barta. The paralysis has lowered to about navel level. He has been able to respond to stimulus, causing his toes to curl and seems to have regained some slight sensation in his right leg. Results of blood and spinal fluid tests also seem encouraging. Barta is also benefiting from some of the finest medical care in the country. He received treatment at Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colo., which is about a two-hour drive east from his place on Salt Creek near Eagle. He is now at the Craig Rehab Center in Denver. “They moved him there on Tuesday afternoon, and that is one of the best spinal cord rehab centers in the United States, so he is in a good spot,” said Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament Director Cynthia Barber. Craig Rehab Center is a nonprofit freestanding hospital that has been rated in the “Top Ten Rehabilitation Hospitals” by US News and World Report every year since the ratings began 18 years ago. “His goal is to make it to the tournament in July,” said Barber. “If the doctors say it’s OK, he will be there. He is so hopeful that it’s going to work out that way. His spirits are really good, and he has a very positive outlook. He pulled back one of his long bows at the hospital, and there is a pond by the rehab center, so now he wants to start work on his casting, as well.” Barber said Barta is also encouraged by the many well-wishers wh

This is "AWSOME" news for Tred. I have watched his shows and have always liked the "my way or no way" attitude he has always has towards whatever he does. He is indeed one of the best out there and puts all the others show hosts to shame in my opinion. "Get-er-done" Tred, I know we are pulling for him.
