The newbie throws sticks - Monday, July 06, 2009 1:26 PM ( #1 )
So... been slowly throwing sticks at a target at the house with my son....right now, any animal that would want to be on my table would need to jump in front of the arrow.
I dropped it off at the shop this afternoon for a check over and a tune up. I found that might rest had shifted a bit and was throwing me off about 2' to the left. I was doing some good damage to the bush next to the target though.
My son is doing well and I dropped his bow off to be tuned up as well. He is loving the fact that he can shoot better than Dad right now.
I think our big hunt might be for rabbits this season or maybe some grouse.. most of those will stand still for us. LOL

Pics coming soon....

I feel ya bro. I had the same thing happen but with my nocking pt just days before my last hunt. Lodged 2 arrows in the fence and was dumbfouned that I could be that far off from one day to the next. It ended up being my nock had slipped over a half an in. No clue how that happened. Chin up, chest out man, you'll be good in no time once all the old bugs are worked out.

mgoodman,
Couple of promising things here...you sound like, even with some frustration, you are still having fun. Don't give up! Practice. You did a good deed by taking your bow to a pro to have it checked out if you are not experienced in setting up or adjusting. Having your son shooting with you is the best thing you can do. Him having some bragging rights is better for him than anything you could script! You two will always be close if you spend time together in the yard, on the range, and in the woods. Enjoy it.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

Yeah.. I tried just looking it all up online on how to make the adjustments... then after staring at it and drooling on the keyboard, I took it in.
Much easier and the prices are decent... besides, I needed a few things anyway! Always a bonus going into the shop... I can find something I "need"!

My son and I always enjoy each others company, although he is a teenager and I am sure it may change a little between now and adulthood.

  Mgoodman,
Like Tx said..keep your chin up...depending on where you are, you still have time to get the bow where you want it!!
I just started practicing with my recurve and I, too, need to drop my compound off at the pro shop.  'Bout time for a new string!
And the time spent with your son...priceless!!

You got it Shadow.. frustration isn't necessary, doesn't help anyway.
It's also pretty funny trying to find arrows in the grass, well at least for me it is.
For my son, maybe not so since I make him crawl under the bushes for them... LOL

Colorado Bow season starts at the end of August. We would be content enough to just do some rabbit hunting
or grouse hunting if we don't feel we are ready for the bigger stuff this year.
My son knows and agrees with me that we need to be comfortable enough to ensure a kill shot on an animal at the far end of our comfort range, or we just don't take a shot. If we do not feel we are ready.... we will use the range all winter and do what it takes to be ready for next season.

Shadow,
winnerschoicestrings.com or firststringusa.com. These 2 string makers are, from what I have seen and have used, are the 2 best out there on the market thses days. I have winners choice on both of mine and have not had any problems with stretch or creep. Firststring boasts a no peep twist guarantee. I'm in for that.

for what it's worth - when I first started shooting a bow, I didn't live anywhere near a shop
I learned everything I could from reading books on the subject
I learned how to tune my own equipment, and got fairly proficient with it
a little while later, I moved, and was near a good shop - but I still did most of my own work (even recabled the thing - back when cables were really cable)
there are lots of help here on the internet (check out archerytalk.com for some good tips and pointers on tuning, form, etc.) - I wish these had been available when I started
if you work at it, your groups will tighten up - and who knows, you might be shooting something bigger than a grouse or rabbit with that thing this year!

I stopped by the shop at lunch... should be ready at 5pm today.
I had a dozen arrows made up for my son and I, had a stabilizer and a sling added as well as a peep sight to mine.
Everything is being checked out, cleaned, waxed, oil changed, made all clean and pretty....

Will be shooting tonight.

Thanks, Gary.  I'm shooting a Mathews MQ32 for my compound.  Think I'm "locked" into the Zebra strings for that one.

Cool about your bow being ready, M!

Holy Cr@p what a difference....

I'm in the bullseye at 20 yards... 5 in a row.
Increased draw weight makes a difference on how much I shoot at one time right now. I had them bump it up to 70#
which is more along the lines of what I wanted.
ANyway... some of the things wrong...
rest was off to the left
sights off to the right
cams out of time
one cam on H and one on L (not sure what those mean)
.. now that she's all cleaned up, wax, oiled, new airfilter and tires rotated... she is screaming!

My son's bow had similar issues and he is on target at 20 yds as well. Need to fine tune them now.

Looking good so far!

Glad to hear you got er all worked out and tuned up for the season. Now it's time to shoot, shoot, shoot. Don't forget, now that you had them bump your poundage up, to stretch a bit before hand. Don't want to tear anything in your shoulder, now that your bow is shooting good.  Good luck brother..................

Dang, Gary!!!  Nothing like jinxing him!!!  Nah, actually good advice.  I even stretch a little once I get settled in my treestand.  It does make a difference.

I would like to, but time is gonna be short this yr. I'm only gonna have 2 weeks of my 4 for hunting this yr in Wi. I will take the other 2 weeks for bear hunting up in Maine in Sept.  Thanks again for the invite Bill. Maybe next yr. Have a good time shadow and let us know how things worked out.

Nah, I believe my 2 bro-in-laws will be pulling up the rear. They have me by better than 100lbs ea so I think I can outrun them fairly easy. It's when they climb the tree after ya, that makes for some good stories.  LOL  "No place to run now boy, now whatcha gonna do".
