Right on...

I am in Springfield, Missouri, which is basically the extreme southwestern corner of the state and the home of Bass Pro Shops.  I've never heard of Moundsville and Mapquest didn't recognize it.  Blue Mound, maybe?  Blue Mound is in the northwest corner of the state.  Good luck on your hunt!

If you make it down to Bass Pro let me know.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

My bad. Mound city. It's located right on Hwy 29.Bout 40miles south of Iowa. My cousin has some lease's there and I guess we are having a family hunt there. We are coming from Mt., Wis., Ill., Ok., & Fla. + a few straglers here and there. About a dozen of us I guess. I hear there are quite a few big bucks in that area. Got any idea what size I should be looking for? Hate to be looking for a 150"er when they only get up to 130". Like I'm gonna pass up a 130"er.LOL

No worries.

Mound City is located in Holt County, which falls basically in the middle of the pack as far as trophy buck counties go for the Northwest Region of Missouri.  Here are the numbers of registered trophy (I cannot recall the number, as in inches, that is used to determine what is considered a "trophy buck" in Missouri, but I believe it is 140-inches -- Don't quote me on that though.  It's either 125 or 140, I believe) whitetails by county:

NORTHWEST REGION

Chariton 162
Harrison 127
Nodaway 108
Daviess 100
Linn 88
Ray 83
Mercer 81
Grundy 75
Carroll 66
Andrew 62
Holt 62
DeKalb 60
Livingston 56
Atchison 53
Caldwell 51
Gentry 51
Clinton 48
Worth 35
Buchanan 31

Honestly, it would be hard for me to tell you what to look for or what size of a buck to set your sights on.  A 200-incher could step out just as easily as a 130.  Anytime you get above I-70 in Missouri you are in "big buck country" and Mound City is above I-70.  Ironically, I have gone right past Mound City numerous times on my way up to hunt a good piece of property just outside of Nebraska City, Nebraska.  There are some dandies up that way too.

I hope you knock down a good one!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,
