Speed goat down - Sunday, October 18, 2009 9:15 PM ( #1 )
After an afternoon of driving around and not seeing anything. I drove into the last field I had left. When I pulled up to it there was nothing visible. I started driving along the edge thinking I was on my way home. As I cleared a small hill in the field there were about 15 goats standing there looking at me. I jumped out of the truck and got the scope on them just in time to see a nice buck disappear behind the hill. I waited till the last of the does went behind the hill and made my move. I ran straight for the hill hoping that I got to it before the first ones started coming out from the other side. It was about 150 yds. and I think I covered it in 46.3 sec. flat. first time I ran in 20 years I think. Well I made it anyway. Then I hunkered down and started stalking them. About another 75 yds. and I was at the crest and could see thier ears through the grass. They must have gotten a glimpse of me cuz they started trotting out from below me into the open. They were 200 yds away it was dark from rain clouds moving in but I seen the 5th one was a nice buck. Figgered it was the one I seen on the other side of the hill. I forgot to mention as I started to sneak up on them after the run my left leg started to cramp. I started to take a knee and that cramp kicked it up a notch.. I swithch legs and that seemed like it would work. Ok so about 7 of them come out in the clear with that buck and they stopped to check me out. I put the cross hairs on him and tried to catch my breath. I was a little wobbily but I squeezed one off. I heard the solid wop and down he went. A little high. I spined him and blew up 1/2 the straps. When I shot the rest of them took off and out from behind the hill came the biggest buck I've seen in a long time. This guy is still the tallest horns I've harvested so I'm happy. It then started to pour rain and I had to kick it in gear. Ill clean him up and take some picts. in the morn before I process him.
