Shootin' Pups ... - Saturday, July 10, 2010 5:12 PM ( #1 )
Son #1 and I went out to a local rancher this a.m. to see if the dog population would give us sum opportunity to thin 'em out ...

Rancher had told me there wuz "a LOT more than last year" ... it's a "small" town, but definitely on the expansion of borders and census ...

Settled in on a knoll about 0730-ish, dumped about a half-dozen and missed a few more ... I happen to REALLY like the way that .22-250 will tumble a rodent @ 200-250 yards ... I'd shoot and he's spottin' and he'd GIGGLE ... and I let him shoot, also ...

We left about 0900, critters got wise and din't pop up every few minutes, got so it wuz 15-30 minutes between appearances, and it wuz gettin' HOT ... so we went to the range, where he got a cut on the bridge of his nose on the first shot with his .50 blackpowder, so I had to do the rest of the main werk on that, until the barrel got hot ... but I'm speculatin' on plans to  put an actual "blind" up, and be ready to sit in it for a good chunk of the day ... get 'em used to seein' it, and -- accordin' to a dog hunter who's tried it -- the dogs don't even look @ it, so they tend to think there's nobuddy around ... worth a try ...

He's still about 4" left of center (50-yard targets, for now) so he's got sum werk to do, then we fooled around with handguns and other stuff ...

A generally fun morning, home by 1100, light lunch, then he took the boys to the water park ... I stayed home in the (sumwhut) cooler house ...

Manged to haul the parts for assembly of the Prairie Dog Hunting Blind back frum the farm today ... now, puttin' it in place, mebbe find a few still out of their dens (despite the snow on Friday, I think it's a bit early for 'em to hunker down for the winter) ... and then next spring, spend as much time as possible out in the blind, practicin' ...
