Scouting today - Tuesday, August 24, 2010 10:10 PM ( #1 )
Went and talked to the Rancher where I shot my elk last year. He said they are tearing up his grain field. Only problem is that the field will be harvested before season starts. My water hole is looking real bad. Dryer than a popcorn fart. One little mudhole that might have some potential for a wallow. Went for a walk around the grain field and couldn't find a spot where they consintrate on. They enter it everywhere. I guess the good news is there seems to be a good herd there. Since I couldn't find a good entry point to the field the Queen and I took a ride over there just before dark to see if we could figger anything out. As soon as we got there there were 2 forkhorn bulls out in the field. We seen one more up in the trees but couldn't tell what it was. More scouting necessary. May have to rely on calling technuiqe again.

So much for that little run over spot you were making for yourself huh? That stinks.

Yeah, I can't believe there isn't water running through there with all the rain we had this year. Plus now the wife wants to go camping on my first weekend off. Which is right when they start to bugle. That wouldn't be a bad thing except she wants to go where we can fish for walleye. Which still isn't a bad thing except there are no elk there. She had all summer to think walleye and now it's the rut.

Took a ride over to the ranch tonight to see if I could show the nefew some elk. Standing in the very spot I shot my bull last year was a huge 6x6. Watched him for a while and a truck came along and spooked him. That is real close to where the 2 forkhorns were too. Maybe I better not give up on my tree too quick.

When does your bow season open? Sounds like it may be worth sitting the stand for a few days, bow in hand, or a little spot and stalk.

It opens real soon. On the 4th. Unfortunately I have to work the first for days of the season. Hope not too many corndogs go tromping through there. Most people hunt the other side of the road so maybe I'll get lucky.

I don't believe it. I just spent 1/2 hr typeing and when I clicked on post message it dissapeared never to be seen again. I ain't typin all that over. Basically, long post short. I lost one of my ranches to hunt due to someone vandilizing last year. I put my stands up and then found out they were hanging out about 1/2 mile south of my stands. They are hitting this little mudhole pretty hard. Going in with the popup in the morn. Have to go to work {night shift}  tomorrow. So if I'm lucky I'll get to call in sick. There was a whole lot more detail in the ghost post but I gotta go shoot my bow.

The elk were hanging out a 1/2 mile south or the vandals were? I'm assuming it was the elk.  I think that as long as you get in well before daylight and be quiet setting things up, you should be fine, unless the winds switches on ya. I think I feel a fever on ur forehead tomorrow night already bud. Think you need to stay in the stand or ground blind and rest.  LMAO!!!!! Either way, good luck man and let us know how things go.

Rick:

Just an FYI: Before I post anything anymore either as a post on here or when I am uploading to the web site, I make sure I copy all of the text before hitting "Post Message" or "Upload" just in case something happens in cyberland like you explained above.  I have learned the hard way on many occasions that sometimes everything you typed gets lost for some unexplainable glitch!  Very frustrating!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Worked. Ive been on night shift. Sat., Sun., Mon., and tonight. I'll hit it again Wed. eve. I'm on a 4 on 4 off schedule so I am constantly rotating days. Plus we rotate day and night shift. That is the kill ya part. Just start to get used to nights and ya switch to days. Best part though is after tonight I have 4 days off. And they are weekdays so no other hunters out there bugling thier butts off. Even I can tell that wasn't another bull.  The weather is getting pretty cold and I'm looking forward to some Elk rutting action. Also found out my bugle call crapped out on me so I might have to replace that. Or I might just get another cow call. Catch more flies with honey ya know. With 2 cow calls I can sound like 2 jars of honey.9/

Well Rik hope your day's off are productive. I know how that switchin shifts after each set of days off is, did it for about 10 years myself. I now how ya feel loosin huntin ground too, lost 200 acres that I've hunted for 9 years a couple weeks ago. 90% of my hunting was there, seems someone had to go in and break some windows and kick in the doors on the old homestead, gal that own's it say's no one but the farmer that leases it can be on the land now. He didn't like the idea of having to tell me but nothing he can do, hope she softens up in a year or so. Now it's back to the drawing board, have access to abot 300 acres behind our place but haven't hunted it much so new ball game this year. Got 5 stands set and hoping things work out, lot's of trails and plenty of pics but no big boys yet. Bow season opens next week, so we shall see. Good luck to ya man.

Re:Scouting today - Thursday, September 09, 2010 3:04 PM ( #20 )
Didn't see anything last night and tonight isn't looking too good either. Pouring rain right now. Hopefully it will clear up enough to go. Prolly just enough to get me out there and then the sky will open up. I hate sitting in the rain. Also I prolly knocked my chances down abit by taking a semi handicapped hunter under my wing. I'd feel better getting him one than if I got one anyway. I'm kinda soft hearted that way. Or is it soft headed? Anyway I've decided to let him hunt out of my ground blind over the waterhole. I'll take my chances on the other stands.
