So can anyone tell me when when the Rut is for Mule deer? My son has a Unit 36 tag in southern NM in late October. I have only been once myself successful at high elevation. I am trying to find out if there is anything special or different I would need to do for his hunt. Any help would be appreciated.

Up here in Oregon, the signs that the rut is beginning start showing up in late Oct. Down there in NM, I would guess the rut starts a little later on - but I'm not sure. Good luck to you!

It will probably state on that site the time of rut for area's of the state. If it does not explicitly give an approzimate time of year, I am sure that there is a phone number to the state biologist dept where you could speak with someone directly. Remember, times for the rut are always dictated by the conditions in an area and not by any specific date.

Right Dan. I've noticed that real close to the 11th it's like someone flipped a switch. The bucks come out of nowhere. That's when I plan my main deer hunt.

The rut in that area is very late in the year and sometimes even into January, if I am not mistaken.

I know down in southern Arizona, southern NM and south Texas the rut is much later than up north - often into January where in NM is unit 36?
