Recurves? - Sunday, March 09, 2008 4:36 AM ( #1 )
I'm thinking about getting myself a recurve at some point.  Does anyone have any suggestions on which make and model to consider purchasing?

Thanks!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Guys

I dont know if it's politically correct to do this but if I am wrong I'm sorry in advance... I know of a guy, from another site, that makes them for you custom made. He charges 300 I believe, which isn't bad. Let me know and I'll give you more info.. If i'm wrong in doing this I appologize again

You're fine.

In fact, tell this person to come over here to our forum and give us some insight on traditional equipment.

Guys

The way to go about getting in touch with him is to go to archerytalk.com and go in the classified section. From there go to the traditional archery section and his "handle" is luvmysupertec, he's a real easy guy to talk to. He builds each bow one at a time by himself. If I remember he asks for 150 up front to pay for the material, and you pick the wood or he can suggest a color or type. When he's done he lets yo know and you send the rest. He seems to have a little lag in building but it's cause it's only him. I've never heard anyone complain. If you go there he also posts pictures of bows he's building or built.

ps thats how I found this place thru archerytalk

Steve,... before I got into the compound aspect of hunting all I had ever shot before were recurves. I guess my dad started me out the right way because all we ever had when it came down to archery equipment was stuff manufactured by BEAR ARCHERY.

My father knew ol' Fred, along with Mort Neff, and his sidekick Jerry Jepetta (sp?) on the old Michigan Outdoors television show. Anyhow,... I've always stood behind Bear archery equipment and if you could find yourself a older Bear Magnum or Super Magnum recurve you'll be very happy with them.

I shot one for almost 30 years, I went though some strings but the bow itself was indestructible if used for it's intended use.

Terry:

Thanks for the advice.  I'll definitely keep it in mind.

It sounds like you and your Dad have a great relationship.  I had that same experience with my Grandfather.  My Grandfather introduced me to hunting at a very young age, taught me how to handle a weapon and to be safe with that weapon in my hands, and to respect private property and fellow hunters.  He was an awesome man.  There's no other way to put it.  I miss him dearly.

Thanks again.

Take care and Good Hunting!

WARNING! Indulging in Traditional Archery can be addicting! After you shoot one, the next thing you know your making your own arrows, quivers, etc.!LOL
I would suggest that any of you guys considering this to find someone with a traditional bow, & have them let you try it out. If it floats your boat, then you might look around for a reasonably priced used bow to start out with, then go from there. There are a lot of pricey Traditional bows out there, but you don't need to get one right off the bat to have fun, & to hunt effectively. I shoot a Compound, a Longbow, & a Recurve, & there are things I like about each one. I will say that shooting Traditional you have to shoot a lot to maintain your skill, comapred to a compound. Unfortunately, there are lots of compound shooters out there that NEVER shoot their bows prior to taking them hunting! I suppose they figure that with sights, it will shoot the same as it did when you put it away last year. WRONG! Don't even try to take a recurve or longbow out & try to hunt with it if you haven't practiced extensively.
I'm glad to see people take an interest in hunting with Traditional gear as it really is fun, & can be just the thing to get a jaded Compound shooter out of the doldrums!

why stop at making arrows and quivers,ect....?  i have even found a site that shows you how to make recurve bows...lol.  seriously, i shot recurves 30 years ago.  my favorite one was a Bear Achery Black Bear model at 50#.  it was a great bow and served me well.  it was stolen and i just never had the time to bowhunt anymore so i never replaced it...now i am sorry i didn't.  good luck and enjoy

Greg,... I used to help my dad with all that kinda' stuff back in the ol' cedar shaft days, made some damn pretty arrows when we were done.

He had ALL the stuff,... fletching jigs (about 8 of them) a cresting lathe, and fletch burner, you took the raw feathers and glued them to the shafts in the jigs and the next day you trimmed the feathers. That element on that thing would get white hot and when you twirled the shaft rotating it from feather to feather it would burn off all the excess material. Man I just loved the smell of those burning feathers. I had a great time helping him, and learned a great amount from his expertise in the hunting world.

Please, please, don't do it!!  It is too addicting!!  I learned to shoot with a Bear Kodiak recurve and several years ago, I bought another one used.  My son has my original (20 plus years old) and I still enjoy shooting the "new" one!!
