i havent yet indulged in the traditional bows, im still trying to gain a fair amount of success w/ my compound but the recurves and long bows is true hunting and im sure it is hunting at its best

I used to shoot a recurve then I went to a compound, it is a totally different beast.

I realize this is a bit of a stale thread, but to throw in some new advice I'd suggest attending a traditional shoot in your area this spring/summer. If you are wanting to try out trad gear and are unsure about what to get, most shoots (even small ones) have 4 - 6 bowyers with booths and they'll let you try out bows until your fingers bleed. If all that fails, most of the shooters in attendance are more than happy to tell you about their bow and let you shoot a few arrows through them. It's a good way to meet folks and try out lots of different brands and styles of bows. If anyone is curious about trad shoots in their area, send me a PM and I'll see what I can dig up that's close to you. Thanks! Mark

Steve, Just ask Tred Barta how he feels about his longbows and home made arrows. For good recurves, Parker made some good ones and also Black Widow on the top end of things. The question you need to ask urself is do you want a take down recurve or a stay together one.

The first time I ever shot a real bow (after all those green sticks with twine we made when we were kids) was @ scout camp ... came home and whined until my dad got me one JUST LIKE IT ... an old longbow type, Bear of course, greenish fiberglass ... it said "30#, 40# @ 28" draw" and I sorta got into it ... Fell away from it in HS a bit, and then I think Ma gave it away to some neighbor kid ... like she did with my comic books and baseball cards ... After I got back into archery (nearly 30 years ago! Wowser!) with a 2nd-hand compound, I saw a recurve @ a community rummage sale ... so I got it ($35) ... I've shot it a bit, but I'm still workin' on findin' the time to improve my skills with the compound (a couple of new ones since that oldie split a limb) ... but I've got it, and if I ever get decent enuf, I'll hafta go back and give it a try ... after a LOT of practice, of course ... It's still fun to shoot a stickbow, imho ... but my arms aren't as strong as they useta be ...

Gary: Black Widow is basically in my backyard. I've been past their place a few times, but the company keeps weird hours and I haven't been able to actually walk through. They have some nice bows and more than likely I'll get hooked on one and want to buy it. However, those babies are expensive, and I'm not sure I can justify the purchase to the wife who is already extremely over-tolerant with all of the money I spend on hunting every year and all of the hunting that I already do. And, besides I just bought a new Hoyt in '07 so that bow is hardly broken in yet. Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

Steve Don't mess with them newfangled recurves, go right to the longbow, thats what I did, many a year ago. Now I shoot three different bows, Saxon Longbow, G2 compound, & Barnett Crossbow, lol.......
Old Cowboys never die, they just keep riding the Range.
