New Jersey's First Black Bear Hunt in Five years - Thursday, July 22, 2010 7:57 AM ( #1 )
With the election of a Republican Governor, the NJ DEP has approved a Black bear hunt for this December. The bear population has gotten out of control here as there have only been three hunts in the last forty years. The bear are enormus here. Trapped problem animals have been as heavy as 800 pounds. A potential new world record just may be wandering the forests of the State. The protestors will be out in force.
The freshest tracks still have feet in them.

From what I know about the bears in Pa, is that they do not actually go into a full hibernation like most of the other bears do. Yes they will den up, but when weather is nice, they do come back out in kind of a groggy state.  Wonder if they'll let non's apply for tags?

The bear in new jersey are active late into winter. I was skeptical myself when they had the first hunt here some 10 years ago but plenty of bear were taken. I've found fresh tracks in the snow as late as February.  It's funny, all my bear hunts have been in Saskatchewan in the Spring. The bear are thin having hibernated all winter up there. In NJ they are huge having fed all summer and fall.

Sounds like a WIN for hunters!  And, also for the welfare of the bear population and for conservation.  That's great!

That's what those PETA morons just don't understand; you have to keep populations in check for the overall welfare of the specie.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

But unfortuneately, they'll try to tie it up in court or protest at the state sites.

Why do they even bother to have it if it is only two days?

I believe it will be a six day hunt, first week of December.

Pa's is only 3 days long but there are some counties that do an extended season at the same time with the deer season. First season is the Mon-Wed of turkey week and then the following Mon starts the deer/extended bear season.
