Need some help choosing bow accessories! - Sunday, August 30, 2009 8:06 AM ( #1 )
Hello all, I am getting a 82nd bowtech and I am in need of all of your wisdom. I have been out of bowhunting for a couple years now and don't really know what is what. I had an old bowtech with quicktune drop away rest and impact archery single pin sight. I don't have any accessories whatsoever and I am wondering what is good as far as the drop aways and multi pin sights? I kind of like the G5 series sights, but I am open to any suggestions. I am planning on shooting a stingloop with my truball short-n-sweet release. Also, I never shot with a stablizer, are they really any help? thanks in advance!!!

Larry:

Welcome to the site and welcome back to bowhunting!

I really like the Montana Black Gold Bow Sights.  I use the Flashpoint 4-pin sight -- 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards.  It has a Photochromatic outside shell that automatically adjusts pin brightness due to ambient light, which means your pins will never be too bright or not bright enough.  It uses the same principal as those eyeglasses that automatically darken in bright conditions and lighten in dark conditions.  I have never seen sight pins stay bright for so long without the aid of a light.  They have other models also available with more pins for shooting at longer distances.  However, the 4-pin sight works well for the type of hunting that I do.

I find that a stabilizer really improves my accuracy.  I started out shooting a bow in the early 80s without one, but once I shot my bow with the aid of a stabilizer I never went back.  Not only does it improve accuracy by "stabilizing" your bow arm, but it also dampens shot vibration down to a bare minimum, which will also improve accuracy.  I use a 10-inch, multi-rod model from Doinker.

I also use a drop away rest that is really tough, accurate and well built.  If you are interested in hearing more about it, just PM me and I'll fill you in on where to get one.

Good luck with the new bow and hunting with archery equipment!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

I agree with Steve on the sight. I wish I had gone with one of them instead of getting a Toxonics.  I have see them and they are really nice. Try and get one with small fibers, either .019 or .010. You will be surprised how much more accurate you become with them. As far as the rest, I use a G-5 drop-away and love it and have a Trophy Taker drop-away on my other bow.  I use the Limbsaver S coils on both bows along with Limbsaver cable slides and limb dampeners and leeches. All of which are your decision to make though.  The one bad thing about this industry is that most of the time it is trial and error unless you can rely on others opinions. On this forum, "NONE" of us would steer you wrong.

Well, Dang!

Now that I (finally) checked that link to Black Gold ... I'm gonna hafta invest in a "better" sight for my main bow ...

BEST aspect of that decision is ... store where Son #1 (and his Bride, and my Daughter #2) werks is listed as a dealer ... interestingly enuf, Cabela's is NOT listed as a dealer ...

OK, Steve ... you like the Flashpoint, I'm thinkin' about the Red Zone ... I kinda like that "extra" alert the red pins would give, to sorta help me not mess up as much ... which I guarantee I will ... mess up, that is ... gotta give these old eyes as much help as possible ...

Only thing is, I'm wonderin' approximately how much Dinero am I gonna hafta sidetrack outta the next paycheck to pay for one ... no prices listed on their website ... but, I'm thinkin' that the "no sales tax" in Montana and Free Shipping might make it as good a deal to order direct ... unless Son #1 can get me one @ a discount ... hmmmmmmm ... decisions, decisions ...

Tnx, Steve, for the input ...

OK ... so I checked the store's website ...

List for the Solaris is $150 ... plus $9 (or more) tax, of course ...

Whut I can see of the difference between the FlashPoint and the Solaris is the "one-turn=one inch @ 20 yards" adjustment feature ...

The FlashPoint lists @ $83-$105 ... no explanation as to the difference in prices ...

No Red Zone model on the site ...

HOWever ... Solaris is "not available at this time" ...

HOWever again, already ... I've had some major issues with the store's "new" website, so I don't really believe anythin' they say there ... gotta go to the store ...

Now, to call Black Gold and get their prices, and see if Son #1's discount skills can help ...

Larry,
I use a QAD drop away (retails for around $50) and use a Tru glow 5 pin site with built in light ( I picked that up for $50 ) but that was a deal I found. Both have been flawless in use and set-up.
Take a look around at your local shops and see what you like.

Oh yeah, I also use a Simms mini S stablizer

Got a VERY nice reply to my request for prices from Black Gold ...

MUCH cheaper to deal with my preferred retail merchant, even if I don't get a discount ...

Now ... figger out how to hide that particular expense for a while ... mebbe under "miscellaneous" ... ?

Yup ... I know that ... very muchly ...

I could POSSIBLY "hide" the product its ownself ... but the expenditure on the CC ... not a chance ... mebbe if Son #1 can finagle some sorta deal and I pay cash, it MIGHT remain undiscovered for awhile ... mebbe as long as six weeks or so ...

Talked with Son #1 ... decided to forego the "marketing ploy" aspects of the Solaris and Red Zone, and get the FlashPoint ... in stock @ the store, so I'll hafta have sum sorta plan by Sunday ... along with an idea of how to bring home a Sweet 16 without hearin' too many questions as to the provenance and such ...
