Had an interesting couple of days in the woods this weekend. Friday morning, opening day, was a complete washout. Torrential downpours and flooding kept me in bed until late and then I headed up later in the morning to camp. One heck of a ride for the first hour with the rain pounding on my windshield. The further west I drove the more it let up and finally the skies began to clear. I set up on the edge of a field and placed three dekes out and began some blind calling every ten minutes or so. Sure enough an hour later I caught a movemnet to my extreme right and four poults came out from the cover. Two large hens were right behind them. Of course they paid no attention to my dekes and stood there not fifteen feet away staring at me. I couldn't move. They realized something was up and they took off running. No chance for a shot at the hens. I tried to get up quick enough to scatter them but they all ran off in the same direction and did not scatter. I had two flocks feeding on the far side of the field on Saturday morning but they had no interest in the dekes or my calling. I just sat there and watched them as well as a bunch of doe and fawns. I gave it a try but fall turkey hunting can be tough. I'm more interested in the upcoming bow season which opens on the 16th. Haven't seen a single buck as yet but they're taring up the woods pretty good.
The freshest tracks still have feet in them.
