My Dog - Friday, August 22, 2008 8:46 PM ( #1 )
Hey guys and gals---I just got a new Panasonic camera yesterday and am now in the digital era!  This is my first try with it and if it works is a picture of my best buddy, Hercules, (Herc, as we call him).  He is a Deutsch Drahthaar that didn't grow the long hair that is predominant in that breed, so he looks just like a GSP.

I have only know one person that had a Deutsch Drahthaar it is a bad @ss dog.  He hunts about everything with it, he is a great dog.  I would love to hunt behind another some day.  He looks about like this one.

Mine is also a "bad @ss dog" as you put it, but mine is pretty, LOL!!!  They are great dogs that came together back in the late 1800s/early 1900s by breeding the German Shorthair, Pudelpointer, Griffon, and Stichelhaar to make an all around dog for upland and water, as well as blood trailing and chasing furred game.  Any particular litter can have ones within it that favor the original individual dogs.  The mother of mine was shorthaired with almost a black and ticked coat and the father was the typical look.  Herc came out of a kennel in Georgia and I believe the other pups in his litter all developed the characteristics like the dog in your post.  He is very docile around people and other dogs, but when he goes into the hunting mode the breeding really stands out.  His nose is unbelievable and he will kill a groundhog, cat, squirrel or any other small game animal if I let him, but I make him concentrate on pointing and fetching pheasants and grouse for the most part.

Thanks Shadow!  He's a good one and everyone who sees him comments on how pretty he is and most also ask what he is.

On the lighter side---this dog is so good that the other day I had him out and he rolled over and pointed four geese as they flew over, LOL!!!

Nice looking dog, TopGun, and Deadeyerik, your dog looks like he loves cameras--nice dog too.

Topgun, my pointing chocolate lab does all those things too. He always tells me in advance when gesse are coming in. He loves pointing pheasants and never misses finding those wingtipped pheasants that fall in the cattail patches.  One other thing he does, when I'm not hunting, I'm fishing, and Lucky stands on the bow and points schools of white bass for me !!!!!!!! LOL

He was about 7 months when that pict. was taken. He's about 15 months now. He has a bunch of other faces but I just can't catch them on camera.

I know what you mean about faces.  The way they move their ears, etc., you would swear sometimes that they are human.  I know mine is a lot smarter than a lot of people I have met in my lifetime, and probably me too, LOL!!!

Hey Monty!  Will that chocolate be up at bear camp with us?  I just love labs and that would be my dog if I hadn't inherited Herc from the kids .

Nope
I don't fly the dog in on the float plane....she stays home on the farm & gets spoiled by family & friends who stay out here while i'm gone.

Yea, I forgot about having to get there by floatplane.  That will be a big part of the trip as I have only been in one small plane in my life.  My Uncle and his youngest boy own a plane service out in Stockton, CA, south of Sacramento.  We were out for a reunion a few years ago and his boy took us up in a brand new Mooney and up over Lake Tahoe.  It was really neat and I'll bet the floatplane in and out will rival that trip.  I can't wait!  Is the weather breaking at all up your way yet?

Dag-nab-it....Ya'll done gone making me want to get a dog!  I know my work schedule and lifestyle would not be good for a dog or spending the time training one.  So I will hold off for now.

Ya'll still made me want a dog though...Hehe!
Love playing that string music and sending a Muzzy flying!
