Mule Deer Experts? - Saturday, February 23, 2008 11:00 PM ( #1 )
Are there any mule deer hunting experts out there that are willing to give a flatlander from the Midwest some advice on chasing one of these majestic creatures down with archery equipment?

Thanks in advance.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Depending on your hunting area spot and stalk will be your best method to take one with a bow.

As mulies are hard to pattern, stand hunting is a low percentage option.  However it will work, if you have the time to scout an area for trails.  Look for areas where several trails converge in one area and you will have a good chance to take one as they pass through the area.  I used this method in one area of southern california with great success.  I had one on one hunt grunt 3 feet from my back as I was sitting on a rock in what appeared to be a wagon wheel of trails.  Scared the crap out of me, as this area was well known for mountain lions.

For the most part I either still hunted creek bottoms and valley's or I spot and stalked the ridgetops.

good luck, mulies with a bow are quite the challenge.

Also its not just the distance the wind can have a huge factor in it too.

Mulies, like antelope, will come to water and I could probably take one with my bow that way out where we hunt in Wyoming every October.  It would definitely be a challenge to take a good one with a bow as they aren't as dumb as a lot of people say they are!   My best one with a rifle was a real nice symetrical 4x4 with browpoints that scored in the 150s two years ago.   I'm sticking to my rifles out there, since the country allows long shots, if necessary, but  I do hunt whitetails with a bow back here in Michigan though.

I have seen some huge mullies and almost stepped on both mullies and whitetails.  They are as dumb as any other animal. (Not Very)  They live by their senses, but every once in a while they get lazy and that is our opportunity.

Thanks for all the advice, guys!

I'm open to hunting all the states and provinces.  I'm a die-hard whitetail bowhunter, but I would like to gain as much insight as possible on how to go about taking a big old gnarly-racked muley with archery equipment before I make a commitment to try my luck.

Feel free to share any stories or expertise you may have in this area.  It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Steve, Public Land Mulies by David Long is an excellent book IMHO. If you get an opportunity to read it i think you'll find some valuable information.

Hey Steve,
Sound like your doing your homework before you come out...lol..
Just remember out here the big guys hang around timberline or in the wilderness area. You will be hunting about 10,000-11,500 feet elevation out here. Don't worry just practice for a 50-60 Yard shot and you will be fine. Spot and stalk, hardly ever use stand.
Can't wait it will be fun!!

co:

After I do my reading homework I'll have to definitely work on my stalking skills as well.  Not sure if I am comfortable with taking shots between 50 and 60 yards.  Heck, I only have 4 pins on my sight: 20, 30, 40 and 50!  I mostly hunt whitetails from tree stands so my shots are normally 30 yards and under.  I guess I'll learn as I go.  I'm sure it will be exciting (and interesting) trying to get within (my) bow range of one of the mountain-top muleys!  We'll just give it 110% and see what happens!

Looking forward to the 2009 Colorado archery season!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve
