Manitoba Bound - Wednesday, February 20, 2008 9:25 PM ( #1 )
I'm heading back up to the wilds of Canada this spring to bow hunt black bear in Manitoba.  This is a fly-in hunt over bait.  The bears in this area are B-I-G and numerous.  It should be exciting to say the least.

Best wishes to all the bear chasers out there!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Hey Steve good luck on your hunt, and nice job with the site. I'm heading to Ga. in March. I got an invite to do some hog hunting. This will combat the winter blues. lol

Hey Steve the best of luck and be safe, hope the big one don't try to come sit in your stand with you.  I seen a show the other day were they were walking in to their stand and there was a huge bear in the stand already.  Just sitting there looking down a them.  It was a huge sow and they throw rocks at her until she climbed down and ran off.  They ended up getting a nice blonde one.

Thanks for the good luck wish.  Much appreciated!

I had a similar experience in Alberta in '99.  There was a monstrous blond sow that would frequent my bait site with 3 cubs.  She was off-limits to shoot, but was definitely exciting to watch.  At one point during the week -- I saw her multiple times -- she finally had enough of yours truly and charged my stand tree.  She stood up on her hind legs and slapped the trunk of the tree, and let our one ferocious growl.  Talk about the "pucker-factor".   Wow!!  I most certainly knew I was alive that day.  My heart was racing.  I guess that it why I try to venture north-of-the-border every year to hunt these magnificent creatures.

Thanks again!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

I was sitting here laughing, now that you are ok and didn't get fed the the cubs.  I really need to go bear hunting.  I love predator hunting I have had a couple close calls with bobcats.  So can only imagine the feeling of a bear coming up the tree.

RE: Manitoba Bound - Wednesday, May 07, 2008 7:50 AM ( #16 )
Well, today (Wednesday) is the day that I find out from Monty if the ice has receded off of the lakes enough to get into bear camp.  If the word is good I'll be heading up to Manitoba on early Saturday morning and then I'll fly-in to camp on Sunday.  If the word is bad and the ice is still to thick for the float planes to fly, I'll have to wait a few more days or even a week before I am able to fly in.

Spring has come late in Manitoba this year.  This is the first time in years that Monty hasn't been able to get into bear camp because of the ice.  Oh well, those bears will be good and hungry no matter if it is Sunday or a little later in the week.

Best of luck to all spring bear hunters and be sure to share your photos and stories of your hunts with us.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Andy:

Thanks, bud.  As of today (Wednesday), we are still waiting on word from the float plane crew about the ice.  There is still a significant amount of ice on the lakes so I may not be leaving on Saturday.  We're playing it day by day now.

Take care and Good Hunting!
