"a Jake in the hand is better than a gobbler in the bush"!

After a frustrating New Jersey season I was in the woods well before dawn for the New York opening day. Just like last year I found myself amongst them. I had wandered too far to the roost and found myself directly below the birds. Well all hell broke loose as dawn approached and birds were flying down all around me. I gave a couple of clucks and the woods exploded with Gobbling. A long beard and a Jake headed right for my set up. The Long beard was leading as they both went behind a large Oak. I brought the gun up and pulled the hammer as that big red head appeared on the other side of the tree. You guessed it. It was the Jake. I can't believe I did such a rookie move after all these years. Still, it's meat on the table and it was an exciting morning. I still have one more tag and a month to fill it.
The freshest tracks still have feet in them.

A filled tag is not a "flub" ... well, mebbe a little ... I've more than several times when I dropped the "wrong" buck, so I know how that feels ... but with one in the bag, the second time around lets a hunter be a bit more patient, and choosy, and ... lucky?
