Kansas Bow Hunt

I just found out a few weeks ago that I will be bowhunting Kansas whitetails this year also. I'll be hunting with John Hower of Twin Lakes Trophy Hunting near Council Grove, Kansas. I should draw a tag for this fall as I already have two preference points built up for hunting the Jayhawk/Sunflower State. John is a great guy and one of our outfitters here at the United Outfitters Association - FORAHUNT.com, and I look forward to chasing some big whitetails around with him sometime in October, and quite possibly in December. You can check out his operation at this link: http://www.unitedoutfittersassociation.com/outfitter.cfm?coID=15098 It should be an interesting fall for sure! Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

Yea Steve, hope you get the draw. Something tells me that you are going to be spending a lot of time in the woods this year. Good Luck!! Martin

Topgun & mneptune: Thanks guys! I appreciate it. After the State of Kansas finally got wise and did away with those darn landowner tags there are archery tags left over in nearly every whitetail unit after the draw, so coupled with having two preference points in my favor I should get a tag. Knock on wood! Yeah after sitting out last fall with shoulder problems and a host of other things that I have no control over, I am going to be spending a great deal of time chasing whitetails this year that's for certain! Thank God I have an understanding wife! Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

Hope it all works out well for y'all, Steve ... Don't forget, tho ... Nodak has a LOT of whitetails, and the bow license is available @ any time, for the entire season ... (I don't recall -- but I'll try to look it up -- if there's a limit on the # of NR tags (yes, on Muleys, in certain areas) but the Landowner tags have no effect on the available number of bow tags sold ... $215, total, as I recall, for a NR bow tag in Nodak ... season runs from Sept. 4 (this year) to about the first week of January ... gotta wear orange during the rifle season (and mebbe in the muzzleloader season?) but that's only 16.5 days for each one ... otherwise, camo all the way ...

I am hoping that my back heals right for me to be able to use my bow a great deal this fall. I got the bear hunt in Maine in Sept. and my usual trek to Wi. to chase the rut crazed whitetails in Oct and Nov. Not to mention all the time for hunting here in Tx. I absolutely refuse to use a crossbow for any of this. I am an avid archer through and through. My wife has even said and I agreed with her that when I die, I am to be creamated and added to my feeders so that I give back to those that I have chased and loved for so many yrs. Good luck this fall Steve and wish I were going with you on some of YOUR hunts. LOL

O: Don't worry, bud... I have not forgotten about North Dakota for a single second. I'm just trying to figure everything out. I'm not sure I can swing it this year or not. I'll know more by the time August rolls around. I'll be heading up to hunt whitetails with Monty at his place in Manitoba in September and I would like to maybe try and hunt North Dakota on the way back home since I will already be up there. We'll see; right now it doesn't look good for this year. Jim: Going to try and get a good one for sure. Thanks. tx: I hope your back heals up for you soon. As you know, I am fully aware of what an injury can do to a bow season. I'm the same way as you. I only want to use my compound or a recurve for bowhunting. I have nothing against a crossbow; I would rather use my bow or nothing at all. Best of luck to you as well! Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

Sounds cool, Steve... Hope you're healing well, Tex. My wife's getting ready for back surgery in April. I'm happy with my knee problems compared to that!!!

I had 2 disc's removed and 3 vert's fused together. At this point, with the way I'm feeling, I would rather have kept taking med's for the pain. At least I got through the day. Now my med's far outweigh what I was taking before and I could do alot more in the day.

Hope all you guys are feeling better real soon! I know what you are going through. Back in 02 I fell from a roof and shattered both my ankles and broke my left arm. Was laid up almost two years! Amasingly I committed myself to getting better and was up and walking in about 8-9 mths, 3 mths physical therapy, 3 surgeries and four screws later and I'm back doing what I love, and that's hunting and fishing!! Keep positive and all will work out for ya's.

I have been able to pull my bow back several times a shoot some arrows. The hard part was bending over to pull them out. 6 arrows later and I was done. To tired and sore to continue. I got no sympathy from my wife either. LOL Was not suppose to lift anything for 3 months after surgery and that was Feb 4th. So I am ahead of the game by just a bit.

OK ... UPDATE ON NODAK DEER BOW NR regulations ... I finally checked thru about seven links on the website, and here's whut I THINK is the basic rule: NRs can purchase a bow tag (non-lottery) @ virtually any time during the season ... There is "no limit" on NRs getting bow tags ... unlike the rifle season (but even that has exception, if a doe tag is OK, later on in the lottery/draw process) ... HOWEVER ... the bow tags are good for Whitetail ONLY, UNLESS one has picked up one of the "ANY DEER" licenses I mentioned on some other thread, earlier ... that's whut allows a person to go for the Muleys OR Whitetail ... So ... if/when any of y'all decide an exploratory deer hunt with a bow in Nodak will fit your agenda, ininerary, schedule and checkbook ($215, IIRC) ... y'all can do it (best prolly to license online, unless you're REALLY in a hurry ... then local outlets (sporting goods stores, county auditors) MIGHT have a NR license, but no guarantee that they'll have one ... county auditor would be your best bet, locally, but those are 9-5/M-F type offices, and dependin' on where y'all are, y'all gotta know whut time it is ... part of the state runs on Mountain, with most of it in the Central Time Zone ... Any other questions on this ... merely ask ... tryin' to help ...

I just found out a few days ago that everyone who put in for Unit 14 in Kansas drew a tag, so I will be bowhunting big Kansas bucks this October with John Hower of Twin Lakes Trophy Hunting for sure! I can't wait! It will be the first time I have hunted Kansas whitetails. Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

tx: Thanks, bud... It should be awesome! I get the first crack at the deer on John's property and if the weather cooperates during the week I'm scheduled to hunt I stand a really good chance of killing a big buck. Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve

tx: I've never hunted Kansas before, but just about every unit/area in the entire state holds some great bucks. The southeast and southwest corners are pretty good. If you concentrate your efforts in the south you would probably do well and it would be the closest areas for you coming from Texas. Take care and Good Hunting! Best Afield, Steve
