Jim Zumbo Outdoors - Friday, August 06, 2010 7:21 AM ( #1 )
I watched the show the other night where he was on Kodiak Island hunting Sitka Blacktails. What got me was they were riding around in a boat looking for deer. They spotted a nice one, shut the motor off and just about floated right up to the deer standing there eating kelp. When the guy shot the deer they were only 60yds from it and he shot it from the bow of the boat still gliding along.  Then came all the nice deer, patting of the backs, nice shot stuff that comes with a show. Now to me for a national syndicated tv show and all of the anti's out there, you would have thought he would have made it a bit more sporting. I know in alot of states, it is legal to shoot from a boat as long as the motor is not running, but come on now. He could have gotten out on the shoreline and made a stalk on this deer. JMO

I haven't seen that one yet.  Was it with a disabled vet by chance because a good share of his hunts are now with vets?  If they were all physically capable of a regular hunt, what you describe doesn't sound too exciting, especially to put on a national TV show.

I don't believe he was a dissabled vet. He was able to get out and walk the 10ft to the dead deer. I have seen some of his shows with the DV's and I applaud him for what he has done with and for them, but all in all, his shows do not excite me in the least. I was just surfing and came across that part of the show, so I had to finish watching it.

I agree with you Gary, if he was able to make a stalk, he should have done so . Otherwise it's just glorified road hunting if you ask me. I'm not real enthused about that kind of hunting, legal or not, if a man's able to get around on his own two feet. JMO
Good luck, be safe and shoot straight

Re:Jim Zumbo Outdoors - Saturday, August 07, 2010 12:30 AM ( #5 )
I have said it before and I'm not afraid to say it again: The majority (not all, but most) of the hunting shows on The Outdoor Channel today have adopted the professional wrestling -- WWE, TNA, NWA, etc. --  mentality.  They show a ton of T-N-A (and you all know what I am talking about), a whole bunch of product endorsement and a little hunting footage.  That is pretty sad if you ask me.  I, mean, is that not backwards?  Shouldn't it be a ton of hunting footage, a little product endorsement and leave the T-N-A on the cutting room floor?  I thought it was The Outdoor Channel, not The Spice Channel!

The "let's-get-this-done-as-easily-as-possible" attitude and approach has swept through the shows as well.  Nearly every commercial you see lately is promoting the use of a crossbow during archery season or for the latest and greatest "dump-it-on-the-ground-and-the-deer-will-come-running" product.  So, it really doesn't surprise me to see shortcuts being taken to get a kill on film.  After all, there are commercials and product endorsement to worry about!  The heck with the legacy, the heritage and the thrill of hunting!

Whatever happened to the pride one gets from choosing NEVER to take the easy way out and working extra hard or going the extra mile to accomplish a goal?  Our grandfathers had it right!

I fully understand that changes have come along to make hunting "easier" for all of us with the design and manufacture of modern day compound bows, arrows, sights, releases, range finders, broadheads, etc.  And, I will admit that I have personally conformed to this trend by going from an instinctive shooting style to hunting with a bow that is fired with a release and is decked out with fiber optic sights and a drop-away rest, but I have personally drawn the line in the sand for how far I will take innovation and/or opportunity.  I never want hunting with archery equipment (or any weapon for that matter) to become so easy that the chase itself becomes nothing more than a frozen turkey shoot.  If the thrill and excitement of hunting ever fades away due to innovation or shortcuts, I will retire my bow/gun, hang it on the wall and hit the golf course.  It's that simple.

As a side note: One of the few shows that I care to watch these days is Greg and Jake Miller's In Pursuit TV.  Their show is a highly entertaining and extremely informative production with a no nonsense, let's-get-down-to-the-business-of-hunting-big-bucks type of show.  That particular format is flat-out refreshing, especially with all of the other mindless drivel filling up the airwaves!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Well guy's I pretty much gotta agree, way to much product pushing and a lot of the T-N-A is pretty much meaningless as far as value added. I do however think they need the gals hunting on the shows and really like to see them be successful. This can only help to attract other females to the sport and without them on our side, we can kiss it good-by. I have been duped on a couple of occasions to try some of the miracle attractants, but not by the shows so much as by word of mouth from customers that have told me how well some of this stuff works. If it works once a lot of people are sold, I really need repeated results before I can commit myself to a product. As far as shooting from a boat, unless you're hunting waterfowl, you need to pursue the game on foot. Sorry about the rant but sometimes I don't know when to shut up.

Did not see that one.  Kinda disappointing!  Jim is usually better than that.
Love playing that string music and sending a Muzzy flying!

Well the T-N-A issues have finally come to full circle here in Tx. I met these girls this last weekend at the Texas Trophy Hunters Extravaganza. Only one of them even has any knowledge of what they are doing, but as we all know what sells product. Check out this website:

Did you at least get a chance to see the home pg that has their pic on it?  The one in the middle with the blue shirt on is the one I talked to about hog hunting and the dogs. The other 2 just looked good.  LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!  I can't open the website either but my wife has been there and read all of their bio's and looked at the pic's. When I click on the link in the post, it gives me the home pg and that is it. Just wanted to show y'all just how bad it's getting with the T-N-A out here.
