I think we are slacking here folks - Tuesday, November 18, 2008 1:23 PM ( #1 )
Site has been slow lately....I know, I know... season is upon us. Some of us should have been done now though and should be posting up the great pictures of your hunts so I can live vicariously through you... I had to web hunt elk this year.
So, how did we do people?
Who got a nice freezer full? a pretty hide for their wall, a new piece of wall decor their SO's can complain about?

someone fill me in!!!!

Well, as far as the season in Montana went, The wolves won.
I hunted 22 days in regular season and 4 in the additional 3 weeks that the season has been extended, (the season was extended because nobody was shooting any elk), and I have yet to find a legal elk in an area I can pull the trigger in.

I saw some nice bulls right beside the highway, I have chased a few tracks for several miles, but the few elk that were left were really spooky.

Mainly what I have seen are wolves.

Might ask them how the elk hunting is, because the humans are striking out.

I for one didn't get to go Wapiti hunting this past year.

I head out West every other year to do so, but this was my stay at home year and TRY to draw a tag in the infamous Michigan Elk Lotto. It's been 23 years now trying to draw a elk tag here at home,.. no dice,... AGAIN !

I put in for a tag plus a second preference point for Wyoming this year, and according to the Wyoming fur n' feathers website it should give me about a 95% chance in pulling the tag.

So I'm all geeked up about it. My hunting partner Dean lives in Green River, WY. and has  been out hunting and scouting hard for our time together in Oct. 09'
Purchased a new .338 Win Mag to take, along with my .300 SAUM for a backup.

I'll find out the draw results come February 28th !

I didn't get drawn for elk in either state I put in for(AZ and PA), so looking forward to hopefully drawing this year.

FYI - the Arizona elk license deadline is fast approaching, those of you wanting to hunt AZ have just a couple weeks to get your apps in.  I'm going after area 27 or area 1 this year for archery bull.  I'm currently sitting at 6 points going into this years draw, so my chances are getting better, they usually get drawn after 7 or 8 points have accumulated.

I have not gotten PA's elk tag yet either, got 6 points going into this year as well, deadline for PA is in September.

Congrats to those who were successful and good luck to everyone in this years draws.

Same for Wyoming elk.  The application period ends at 5PM MST next Monday, 2/2/09.  I have two friends that have a good chance at drawing bull tags this year, so it looks like I will be helping on another archery rut hunt.  That's as good as it gets and I can't wait for September to get here!!!

My Dad is coming out again this year to hunt along with my Brother-in-Law as well.
My Dad and I did a guided hunt in 03 for elk with Whispering Pines out of Craig and both of us got a nice bull....so he wants to do it again.
It's a private land hunt, so its guarenteed tags and I can still to a draw if I want (more than likely).

If anyone is interested in a guided hunt, I would recommend Whispering Pines. They treated us very well.

All three of my buddies drew either sex tags and one also drew an extra cow tag out in our hard-to-draw unit!

"mgoodman---Is that hunt with Whispering Pines through the Ranching for Wildlife program? "

No, this is a private outfitter with leased lands and guarenteed tags since you are buying land vouchers basically. My dad and I hunted with them before and both dropped bulls by the 2nd day. I won't even go into the bad shooting on the 1st day with two 6x6 bulls... LOL... little bull fever I think.

Anyway... The owners are great people and a good group to hunt with. If you ever get the urge, I would recommend them in a heart beat just from my past experience.

Cool!  I think Colorado has started clamping down on those types of tags and making them use them on private land aren't they?  I believe in the past they were getting tags for a private piece of property and then selling the tags for use anywhere in the unit, including public lands, if I'm not mistaken.

Topgun -- Not sure on that one, but I will check with DOW and see. At WP, they lease the land for hunting and tags are from DOW that we have to do just like you would buying at Walmart. It's not a voucher like land owners get, its leased land with OTC tags basically.

I hunted with them a couple of years back and that's how it was....I will be checking with them though.

If anyone else knows a good elk outfitter, we are still keeping options open. My brother in law would like a true back country hunt instead of the hunt offered by WP. They have a base camp you hunt out of which is a really nice trailer versus a true horseback in and camp out of a big white tent style hunt. Since this is his first hunting trip/experience....I'd like to make it a rememberable one and keep him coming back. My nephew will be out as well, but i think we are going to start him off on a bird hunt or a doe hunt on private land.
