Duck Stamp price going up ... - Friday, April 24, 2009 10:04 AM ( #1 )
Someone told me a few days ago that the Migratory Fowl and Conservation (Duck) stamp will go to $25 in 2010 ...

It's been 18 years since it jumped from $10 to $15 ... and one of the rationales mentioned wuz that the cost of land acquistion has far outpaced the funds available ... I'd add that everyone is getting paid more (in inflated dollars, of course) than they were 18 years ago, so it stands to reason that mere maintenance (which the Federales do NOT manage very well) and labor costs have also increased greatly.

Personally, I don't have a big problem with the increase ... but y'all know there will be a LOT of screamin' when it takes effect ...

Problem is Jamie...the Duck stamp went up to $25, duck loads went up, gas went up, clothing, boots, etc.  After you total it...Duck hunting went up a WHOLE BUNCH over the past few years.  As well as any other form of hunting!

I know, Dave ... I wuz merely tryin' to keep the bad news to one item at a time ...

Some of our deer/elk/moose huntin' last fall wuz in the midst of some of the highest gas prices ever ... that got perty pricey ... even tho it din't keep me frum doin' a lot of drivin' to each/all of those various places ...

Ammo might be the worst part of this year's seasons ... findin' it, let alone payin' for it ...

I heard that on the ammo.  I have a buddy who just got his CCP.  He bought a Glock 19 and a Bersa .380.  He tried getting ammo for the Bersa and found it was $40 per 50 shots!  I found a box of 20 9mm hollow points and 50 .380 target loads for $36 total.  I think Pres. Obama is freaking everyone out BIG TIME!!!!  My usual supplier of 9mm ammo is no longer getting any target loads and his prices are going up.

When will it ever end???

Dave, those prices you quoted for last week are history, accordin' to my local 'smith/dealer ...

He told us @ the club meeting that for most centerfire stuff, it's averaging about $1/shot or more, and he's not takin' much markup ...

Yeah, it's costly, and hard to find ... no 9mm, and a lot of other common handgun ammo ... little to none for .223, and if you find it, the price is WAY up ...

Aside from that, I thot I'd toss in the info about our "Conservation Directive" (Spring goose hunt) ... it offers a LOT of opportunity, but it is VERY iffy, as to whether a person can find the birds, and if they'll stick around more than a day or so ...

OTOH, I've heard of guys who bagged as many as 49 in one day (two guys, and in a TOTALLY unexpected area!), and over 200 in a day (group of four, I think) ...

NR permits are "cheap" ... electronic calls and unplugged guns are legal, NO LIMITS ...

Well, here's a copy of the 2009 regs ... emphasis on any stuff, esp. NR, is mine ... (altho I should mention that it's basically over ... birds have gone thru, and they didn't stay very long, so I dunno how anyone did ...

Spring Light Goose Season Regulation Summary
Species Daily Limit Possession Limit Open Area & Season Dates Shooting Hours
Light Geese No limit No limit Statewide Feb. 21-May 10 1/2 hr before
Snow geese sunrise to 1/2
blue geese, after sunset
and Ross's geese

Residents must have either a 2008-09 or 2009-10 resident hunting license (fishing, hunting and furbearer certificate, and a combination license, or a small game, plus general game and habitat license).

Nonresidents must have a 2009 nonresident spring light goose season license ($50). This license is valid statewide for the entire spring season, and does not affect the eligibility to purchase a nonresident waterfowl hunting license for fall 2009.

Required licenses may be purchased through the Department’s Bismarck office, website, or toll-free phone licensing system (800-406-6409).

All 2009 spring light goose hunters must register with the Harvest Information Program prior to hunting. Resident hunters with valid 2008-09 licenses can get HIP registered through the Department’s website, or by calling 888-634-4798. Residents or nonresidents buying a new license can register with HIP through any of the Department’s three licensing options. HIP registration for the spring season is also valid for hunting migratory birds in fall 2009.

Check your HIP number if you have already registered.
Register with HIP.

A federal waterfowl stamp is not required.

Electronic and recorded calls, as well as shotguns capable of holding more than three shells, may be used to take light geese.

Waterfowl rest areas designated for 2008 are not in effect during this season; however, private lands within a rest area may be posted.

Nontoxic shot is required for hunting light geese.

Driving off established roads and trails is strongly discouraged during this hunt because of the likelihood of soft, muddy field conditions, and winter wheat that is planted across the state. To encourage positive landowner/hunter relations, please seek permission before attempting any off-road travel. Sprouted winter wheat is considered an unharvested crop, therefore hunting or off-road travel in winter wheat is not legal without landowner permission.

Wanton waste of migratory game birds. No person shall hunt any migratory game bird without making a reasonable effort to retrieve downed birds, and retain them in his/her possession until processing.

Only snow geese, blue geese, and Ross's geese are legal.

Hey, I started waterfowl hunting about 10 yrs ago and I really don't care how much it goes up.
Duck hunting is a priceless pastime that you really can't put a price on.
And your right, the cost of hunting ( and everything else ) has gone up in price. But we're still willing
to dish out the funds for a sport we have passion and love for.

I agree, but there has to be a limit to what I can spend - my paycheck can only take so much!
