DIY mule deer hunts in Colorado - Monday, October 12, 2009 7:44 PM ( #1 )
I'm looking for advice on DIY mule deer hunts, either bow or rifle for Colorado. The biggest thing is where in Colorado is my best chance at a decent buck. Any tips would be great.

What are you considering a "decent" buck?
All deer tags in CO are draw only.
You would need to put in for preference points in order to get
a tag in what is considered a "Big Buck" area.
There are a lot of bucks in all areas though... it would be a matter
of how hard you want to hunt.

I've seen bucks from Denver to Craig that I would consider a decent buck,
but I don't eat the antlers, so its a matter of opinion.

I live in the West Slope area, so feel free to drop me a line if
you need any help.

Thanks
Mike

I consider a "decent" buck anything 5X with a 26" or better inside... just kidding ya.

I don't know, realistically a 4X or better with a 19-20" spread or better for my first one. I'm not looking for record book but I would take it. LOL I appreciate any help I can get.

There are some nice bucks up around Craig that I would put in that range or better.
I've been wanting to draw up that way for a while now myself....but I always seem to stick closer to home
since my wife and boys hunt with me now as well.
I've tried to keep it all to a minimum of travel and prep just to make sure they stay interested.
We have some pretty decent bucks here as well in the 4 corners area if your willing to do the
walking and get away from the crowds.
This year was tough since it was so warm and dry... thinking with a mild winter that next year will be
pretty good as well... lots of babies surviving and lots of bucks getting a year older.

Thanks for the info. I hope I wasn't shooting too high with my "decent" buck measurements. It was just a shot in the dark. I guess I won't know what my decent buck looks like until I have a pin or crosshairs on him. LOL
