Creating Deer...... - Saturday, June 06, 2009 5:08 PM ( #1 )
Since this was a subject/post discussed on this forum, ("Maybe the biggest breeder buck of all time"), here is an article expounding on farming whitetail deer.

Texas Deer Association Launches Campaign on Outdoor Channel

Texas Deer Association

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Feeding a young fawn or producing a 200-inch whitetail buck can be a rewarding and profitable business, and the Texas Deer Association is spreading the word. The TDA is proud to announce it has launched a series of video messages on Keith Warren’s Deer & Wildlife Stories show on the Outdoor Channel which promote the deer breeding industry as a fun and lucrative agricultural endeavor for families and land owners with small tracts.

“Raising whitetail deer is one of the fastest growing industries in rural America and we want to help introduce this great opportunity to families and wildlife enthusiasts across the country,” says Karl Kinsel, executive director of the Texas Deer Association. “There are thousands of people who have discovered how fun and profitable raising deer can be as a hobby or as a business. Not only can raising deer provide a good income, but it preserves land and habitat for wildlife and the environment. It’s one of the most ‘green’ industries out there.”

Deer farming is nothing new, explains Kinsel. Man has farmed and bred deer since 5,000 B.C in China and deer breeding officially came to North America around 1908. Today, the industry drives $3 billion into the U.S. economy and supports tens of thousands of jobs in small communities across the country. In addition to its huge economic impact, deer farming is at the heart of wildlife conservation efforts and deer breeders often help state wildlife authorities develop better herd and habitat management techniques.

Deer & Wildlife Stories began airing on the Outdoor Channel in January and gets up close and personal with whitetail deer and educates viewers about the future of the species. The show has received rave reviews and airs three times every week — Tuesdays at 9am EST, Fridays at 2am EST and Saturdays at 5:30pm EST.

The TDA is the only non-profit organization solely committed to improving the quality of Texas deer herds through improved habitat, modern harvest strategies and genetic improvement. As a part of its public education efforts, the TDA publishes a full-color bimonthly magazine, Tracks, which updates TDA members on current legislative news, deer genetics and game management issues. The TDA also hosts an annual convention and trade show featuring a live deer sales, auction, golf tournament and other events.

The TDA and Keith Warren can kiss my grits.  I don't believe in raising what should be wild animals inside a fence and I don't apologize to anyone for my view on the subject!!!

I am totally with you Mike........

My view is"; Anybody who engages in this activity, whether raising pen fed deer or if they have thousands of acres, or the wannabe "hunters" who want to harvest any bucks or their offspring that are contrived with these totally artificial means are not "hunters" at all and do not belong in our hunting arena at all....

Furthermore I quit watching Keith Warren shows a long time ago....because of the "high fenced" places he chose to bag his tame deer (He usually says where he is hunting and if you look them up, yep, high fence)(major clues are the unatural amount of bucks and the snow-white racks) ....

If deer were raised in China thousands of years ago it was an agricultural venture and not for a fake "sport".......

Hunting in the U.S. is a heritage, a privelage, and an activity where we individualize ourselves with God and nature.....

Anything other than that is not part of nature but only part of somebodies ego....

The article above only helps assure me that I don't have to rationalize where and how I hunt....

IMHO,
Randy

Top and the rest of y'all that have read my feelings on this know that mother nature takes car of her own and to mess with it is just not right. I am more proud of taking an older med sized 8pt than I would be takng a 190 class deer from behind a fence or to have it genetically enhanced just for the sake of profits. It is not for the betterment of the herd, it is to sell more "FOR MORE", and anyone that believes otherwise is sadly mistaken.  My pers opinion. I applaud those that try to keep the diseases down in wild herds by working with local and state agencies but the rest as top says can kiss my a**.

I posted the "Maybe Biggest Breeder Buck of all time" thread because I thought the antlers were a sight to see.  Let me set the record straight first/last and forever.  I have never and will never hunt behind a fence or claim an animal hunted behind one should be admired or admonished.  Keith Warren, Ted Nugent and several others are folks that continually hunt behind a high fence, whether in TX, MI, or wherever.  Free ranging and fair chase animals are the only ones that should ever be considered for any record book consideration.

I hunt for meat, not for trophy.  If I am not going to eat it I do not release and arrow or pull the trigger.  If I get the opportunity in future years to take a buck that most would consider a trophy, so be it.  Otherwise I will enjoy my tender backstraps, tenderloins, and hams forevermore without a big rack above the mantle.
Love playing that string music and sending a Muzzy flying!

Very good philosophy Bowman and it is probably the same for most of us on this forum from what I have gathered since it's inception!

Nothing taken by the post bowman. We all know how you hunt and why. Yes the antlers were nice for some  and ugly for some others, me included. Keep the posts coming man, we like them.

+1 on Gary's comment.

By adding to the subject, there was no inference that you felt otherwise. I think we are all pretty much in agreement in the ethics of fair chase hunting versus harvesting fenced animals. As far as rack development, there is nothing wrong with providing good year round nutrition and instituting a good management policy regarding points taken, etc. to naturally grow the best bucks that mother nature will provide you.
