Cow elk down - Wednesday, November 10, 2010 9:46 AM ( #1 )
My buddy from Wis. got his cow elk yesterday. Real nice one too. Bad part is that he shot it 3 miles back in. We left the truck, 3 of us with 2 game carts at 4:30. We finaly got back to the truck at 10:30. 6 hrs. of fun. We were wore out. Completely exhausted. It hurt to raise a can of pop up to our mouth. When we were in the truck driving home I said that was fun, lets do it again. Next year. There wasn't one inch of flat ground to be found. I'll see if I can get some picts. up here.

Good choice Dan. Congrats. Them cows eat much better than those horns by a long shot anyway.

Good job Dan. I don't know if there's a better table fare than elk meat.

Not to argue, dodge' ... but ... given a choice, we'll take moose before elk, for average table fare ... NOT that we'd ever turn down elk ... merely ... given a choice ...

(Besides, more meat on a moose ... heck, we've still got a fair dab of white-wrapped packages in the freezer frum my '09 moose ... been about 13 months since I picked it up frum the butcher shop ... no "freezer damage" yet, and we're still enjoyin' it ... )

I would say, however, that how well one takes care of the meat after the harvest has a MAJOR role in how good it'll taste on the table ... no matter whut kinda critter ...

(Another joke: friend of mine in the club does a LOT of huntin' ... went to New Zealand a couple years ago ... LOTS of trophies, and lots of different meats ... SO ... he once took sum jerky to werk @ the mine/plant ... the others were snarfin' it perty fast, and he asked 'em if they liked it ... they did ... until he told 'em it wuz coyote ... that's when the pukeage started ... )

I wouldn't turn down either one O. I love both elk and moose meat. Personally I think elk meat is just a little milder, not much, just a little. I'd take a moose for the same reasons as you. The one I shot this fall will probably last us until at least this time next year or beyond and we eat moose meat a lot. In fact my wife told me she don't want me to hunt em again until we polish this off so I told the boy he'd better ask for seconds and thirds. LOL.
Good luck, be safe and shoot straight
