Cover scent questions

I' not sure if this falls under the heading of "Bowhunting Equipment", but I certainly do use cover scents & lure scent while bowhunting, so I thought I would ask the question here........ Have any of you ever used a product from BorderCrossing Labs called Deer Herd or VS-1 ? The Deer Herd product is a cover scent in "stick" form- just like underarm deodorant. You rub it on trees, rocks, etc..... in the area where you are hunting in order to get the deear to feel comfortable and relax. The VS-1 product is a scent lure- again in a "stick" form as well as liquid. This is a vaginal secretion (read: not doe in estreus urine) taken from does during estreus. This stuff is only used during the pre-rut & rut. A buddy of mine used the Deer Herd product last year and swears by it. He told me that he had 4 does come in downwind of him and they were relaxed as could be- never knew he was there or showed any signs of being on "alert"........... until he ventilated one of them at 10 yards. I'd like to hear any comments about either of these products or the company that makes them. Thanks, Rob

I spent the money & tried the vs-1 scent several years ago here in NY state (gun & bow). Didn't have any luck with it. Just to be fair, I've used other products and didn't have any luck with them either. One product I used on a scent wick and had several deer walk under it and never checked it out. Cover scents I swear by just to help give me that "edge" at staying undetected.

I swear by the Golden Estrous for whatever yr you are hunting. Watching it last yr and taking 2 bucks with it made a believer out of me. Threw all of my Tinks in the trashcan, except for my Sow in Heat.

I have never had that much luck with scents but I believe thats due to the low number of deer we have in my area. I have seen deer stop and smell but never come to the sent itself

I've experimented with scents on and off for years, mainly for elk and whitetails. I've pretty much given up using them as attractants but I do use them for cover scent. Use it on my boots when I walk in. I do use Trails end #307 in front of my cameras. Works good pretty much year round. I would like to try the VS-1 series of cover scents. They seem to work on TV, but of course EVERYTHING works on TV.

I try and use my own cover scents like dirt grass leaves from the area I hunt I wash my gear in sent free soap in than dry them outdoors and than put them in a bag with dirt grass leaves. But deer around here are use to smelling and seeing us on tractors and working in the fields I really think if you could stand the smell diesel fuel would be a good cover sent

I use alot of the earth cover scents when I hunt and Golden Estrous for an attractment scent. Other than that, you can use as much as you like, but if you do not take in the wind direction when hunting, all the scent in the world will not make you successful.

I wash all my clothes in scent free soap and put them in a plastic bag that I descent also. If I'm on a hunt away from home I use a lot of scent killer spray on my clothes and body. Then while I'm out hunting I just grab a sage bush as I'm walking by and rub it all over myself. It's a pretty powerful scent. I've never had any luck with atracting scents except maybe a big pile of apples and corn.

Scent killer sprays on my equipment, scent killer detergent with UV stabilizer on my clothes, code blue attractant during the rut.

99%, is my cover scent of choice on all my gear. Think it is by Hunters Specialties.

I use no cover scents at all. You never know what will send a deer reeling through the woods. I used to smoke and have had deer walk right up on me, downwind, while smoking and then I have had them blow and snort the second they caught wind of it. I would rather be scent free. Smell like nothing....there is nothing to fear...just sit still...and harvest your deer!
Love playing that string music and sending a Muzzy flying!

The best scent is no scent. That's why I rely heavily on scent killer and just rub my clothes with a local bush or branch such as pine or sage.

Agreed, NO scent is best. I just use the scent waffers on the outside of my scent-lok clothes and hang my hunting clothes on a line outside near the local foliage once I get to camp. Then when getting ready, spary liberally with scent killer to eliminate any human odor, ruber boots always, even when it's cold.

Agreed, no scent is the best, but when it's hot out in early season, I like to put out a cover scent to mask my sweat from the mile or so hike in to my stands. Seemed to work good up in Maine. Had this guy to the left @ 18 yds, never knew what hit him.

I once had a ten point shy away from Tink's 69, don't know why. The story ended well though, because I still was able to harvest him, lol......

I totally agree with deaderik, no sent is the best. I do have a large toat and after washing in sent wash I put a arm full of cut sage in the bottom. It lasts for months. Here is a true story: Loggers had a freash pile of pines, I cut a nice blind in the tops laying in the ground and added a little brush. I was deer hunting but a elk herd came in. I used a product called "Moonfire" as a cover. It has a sweet smell that my wife likes, better than the urin. An elk walked up to my blind and stuck it's head in my blind. I could have touched it's nose. SD
