Chasin' Squirrels - Sunday, March 09, 2008 4:26 AM ( #1 )
I remember hunting for squirrels with my shirttail cousin when I was in my very early teens.  Those elementary moments were my first actual hunting experiences.  I used a borrowed single shot .22 with open sights back then and had a blast chasing those tree-huggers around with that old bolt action.  I recall making some fantastic shots with that gun.  It's been a long time since I shot a rifle, but I'm starting to get that "itch" again.  I'm not sure if I will hunt big game animals with a rifle ever again, but I think it would be fun to get out and decrease the squirrel population from time to time.  Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against rifle hunting.  I just lost the zeal for it when I was still toting around a rifle for whitetails back in my then home state of Wisconsin.

Squirrels can be a lot of fun.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

My wife just bought a squirrel dog this past weekend ( A Treeing Feist ). She is only 6 weeks old and does the shake to a squirrel tail already! Both parents have awards from hunting squirrels and raccoons.

I do like to hunt those tree rats, use my .17 cal for them.  there are a lot of greys around here and a few fox squirrels.
I have a friend that has a "rat terrier I think" anyway this little guy is so fast and it is just fun to watch him hunt and tree them.

Not to mention, par boiled in salt water, rolled in meal and fried they are great tasting.

Compared to Putnam & Orange Counties, where I live (Columbia County) doesn't seem to be as many "tree rats!!"  Always hated them when deer hunting!  Sounded like deer walking in woods and see one of them!!  Made the time go, I guess!

It's funny sometimes how easy it is to see squirrels while out in the woods, but the deer -- which are about 125 times the size -- remain completely elusive.

Most often I can tell the difference, but ever now and again I'll be at the edge of my seat in my tree stand listening to the footsteps and waiting for the "deer" to appear that I just know is out there somewhere.

Can you imagine how much trouble we would be in if squirrels were really that big?  LOL!
