Charges dropped in East Tenn. turkey hunting case

Associated Press - July 13, 2009 4:15 AM ET

DECATUR, Tenn. (AP) - Prosecutors have dropped criminal charges in a Meigs County case in which a man was mistaken for a turkey and was shot several times.

Shane Godsey had been turkey hunting in March when he was shot with approximately 30 shotgun pellets fired into some bushes. William Whaley of Decatur had been originally charged with reckless endangerment in the case.

Godsey has said he missed more than six weeks of work while recovering from his injuries and attending court dates. He himself was charged with illegal hunting at one point, on unauthorized land.

According to The Daily Post-Athenian, Godsey has filed a civil suit against Whaley, which is pending.

Prosecutors said in General Sessions Court that all charges are being dropped.

Based on all the people getting shot this year while turkey hunting, this story did not surprise me but what caught my attention this time was that an individual was shot "several times". Opps, the guy's still moving...shoot him again, shoot him again!!!!

I agree. You have to know that the guy was screaming after the first shot. I really don't think he just stood there and took the pellets and made no sound. Just stupid.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

  Hell...I'd a shot back!!!
We've had our share of hunting "accidents" this year in NY's turkey season.  Like was said before....what ever happened to knowing your target... and what's beyond!!

I will never understand how someone can mistake a human for game. That's criminal not an accident. OK, you fire at game and some unseen person beyond is hit. That's an accident. This guy really should be prosecuted, especially after firing multiple shots. Maybe the bunny huggers hope we all shoot each other.

"Hope"... ??  More like dance around a big bonfire, praying and chanting to the gun-gods that we do!

Take care and Good Hunting!
