Carbon Arrows

Guys, I would like to caution all of y'all about the dangers of Carbon from your arrows. I friend of mine from Co. a couple of months ago was cutting some of his arrows down, and got a splinter in his thumb. He got most of it out, but it ended up getting infected. He had to undergo IV's for 3hrs ea every 12 hrs for 2 weeks to counter-act the effects of the carbon in his bloodstream. Guys, be really careful to inspect all of your equip prior to use and be extremely careful if working on your own carbon arrows.

I'm not in any hurry to switch to carbon ... Son #1 had an arrow shatter and puncture his hand (he wuz settin' up a bow for a customer) and he wuz very fortunate and recovered quickly enuf to tag a P&Y Pronghorn later that fall ... Nope ... aluminium is good enuf for me ...

I love my carbon arrows. I have been hunting with them for several years. I, however, know that I do not have the equipment or patience to learn the ways of my master bow/arrow tech. I will let him set me up and fletch my arrows because he is D@MN GOOD at what he does!!!

Guys, It is not only in the arrow making that they may get splinters, but the shooting of them also. Be careful if you do like I do when I pull my arrows from the target. I ususally run my hands down them to get all of the excess foam off so that there is nothing on them for the next shots. Inspect them when you pull them out, one by one, especially if you have arrows real close after the shots. Look at the nock ends also to make sure of no splinters or cracks. Been quite a few that have gone off upon shooting them due to cracked nocks.

Another thing you have to watch out for is when your arrow shatters inside a deer. Cut out all the meat in the area of the arrow. You don't want to eat that stuff or get a sliver while butchering.

Understood Gary. I have seen the devastating effects that an arrow that splinters at release can do. When I am shooting new arrows I only shoot them 2 at a time and at different areas of my target to see if I get any "flyers". I will thne pick out 4-6 to hunt with after a few rounds of single shots and then they go up and never get shot again until they head toward a deer. I have also have a carbon arrow that went into 5 deer before it was retired. But it is better to be safe than splintered!!!

When you are refletching your arrows you need to scrape the glue off before putting on the new fletching, be careful not to scrape any of the carbon off!!!!!

Right on guys. I would hate to hear that any of y'all got one of those nice little jewels and could not do what we like to do anymore.
