Calling Coyotes - Saturday, February 23, 2008 11:04 PM ( #1 )
Any yote hunters out there that can provide some tips and techniques for getting those elusive dogs in close for a shot?

I like to shoot them at night, just walk along the creek bottoms listening.  When you hear them stop and if they are along ways away close the distance little.  Then just sit down and start calling, they usually come a running.  Then when he's in range pop him with the old 870 and some buck shot.

I hunt them using a 243, but I'm looking for a 22-250 to use. I have an electronic caller and a "decoy" I've made myself. It seems to draw there attention away from me and where I'm calling from. I hunt only during the day(cause I don't want to stay up all night) I call for about 20-30 minutes if something doesn't come by I move about 200=300 yards and call again. I've never done it for more that a half a day but it's mostly to get me out of the house.

That is ok tactic for coyotes, but bobcats take alittle longer sometimes.  So keep that in mind.

I've never even seen a bobcat, although I would love to. Do you have a lot of them down by you??

I'm guessing your first passion is duck??? I bought my plans for a duck boat off a guy in Ore. Sam Devlin. Started it this month. We'll see how I do. Worse case senario is I throw out $1000 worth of wood and fiberglass

Actually my fist passion was coon hunting I started when I was only about 3.  Then came predator hunting, my dad killed the 3rd biggest bobcat in Kansas about 15 years ago. I am fairly enthused with duck hunting, LOL.  I am gearing up for the turkeys right now.  2 more days, three more nights.

Now I really hope that you take your time and really like the boat when you are done. What are building????

Could have shot one not 25 yards from the house this morning if I was a bit faster.  Old age creeping up on me.

Have seen two yotes in the last two days so it is time to get out there and hunt them again.

Love to hunt bob cats too but we have a season on them.  And have to tag them.

Have both, plus lots of coons here on the hunting farm in KY.

The boat is designed by a guy named Sam Devlin in Ore. or Wash I'm not sure now. Anyway I'm building the Black Brant II. If you do a google search on it you'll see it's a pretty neat boat and it's good in open water and close to shore and it's cancellable.

Addendum---Evidently Steve felt the same way as I see the post is gone!!!

I wuz wonderin', Top' ... if y'all had been relying a bit too much on the anti-freeze ... good that y'all explained that Steve removed whut I couldn't see in the first place ...

(Considerin' all the spammageness we get anyway, I don't feel as if I missed anythin' by not seein' an advertisement ... )

OTU---It was a guy that was making his first post and it was basically a promo for his website where they sell hunting stuff!

Ah ... that sort ... yep ...

I wuz a bit worried about wearin' a cap with a store logo on it, when I put up that deer foto from Montana ... nobuddy sellin' nuthin' here ... (except, of course, enjoyment of huntin' and referencin' the G/O types who are signed on as registered/sponsors ... isn't that why we were attracted to this place initially?)
