RE: Broadheads: Mechanicals vs. Fixed Blades - Sunday, March 29, 2009 2:58 PM ( #21 )
I used Thunderheads for about 20 years and I also had some issues with my arrows planing, and suffered inexplicable bouts of inaccuracy no matter what I did or how I tried to tune them.  I've also had them come apart on me after impacting the shoulder blade of a whitetail.  That was surprising!

As mentioned earlier, I made the switch to the 3-bladed G5 STRIKERS and have been extremely impressed with these heads.  The deciding factor happened on the practice range.  I pushed a neon green colored golf tee into my Block target with only the head of it exposed and stood back at 50 yards.  After shooting an arrow and splitting the head of the golf tee in half at 50 yards my mind was made up, so after 20 years of using the same brand of broadhead, I made the switch.

I was never thrilled about practicing with broadheads attached to my arrows either, but now I practice more with the STRIKERS than I do with field points.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Wow, that's impressive with any broadhead, I retract my previous statement and replace with " If I had to switch over to fixed blades I'd give those Strikers a whirl".

I have heard a great deal of good about them, even from Parker for my wife's crossbow, but wish they came in 6 paks. I like bang for my hard earned buck.

I must say that everyone has pointed out most of the issues with fixed and mechanical heads.  I used to shoot spitfire 2 blades for years.... until I shot a doe at about 5 yards from my tree stand.  The arrow didn't exit and I had no blood trail to follow...  I found the doe scouting next year not 150 yards away in the thick brush, my arrow with the bones.

Not recovering that animal got me to switch to Thunderheads.  They group well enough and I have never had a problem finding blood even without an exit.  Being sold in 6 packs is a bonus since I'm pretty stingy.

I haven't yet tried Rage heads with the cut on contact heads, but I am happy with the thunderheads so why change.

If I am mistaken, someone correct me, but if memory serves me right, I think that there are only 3 mfg'rs that sell there BH's in 6 packs. Muzzy, Wasp and Thunderhead. All of which are real good heads to use.

As far as I know Gary, those are the only three. Rocky Mountain used to a few years ago but not anymore.

With the way prices are now days, I want the best for my money and any of these heads fly great out of my bows. They are usually just a bot cheaper than the 3 paks also.
