Beagle training tips - Monday, May 12, 2008 4:22 PM ( #1 )
I have a 1 year old beagle and was wondering if someone has tips on training the stubborn guy.  I would like to get him bunny hunting next winter.

either hunt him with another beagle that hunts already, or the only thing I have ever seen that worked, is, build a pen and put rabbits in it.  let him run the rabbits in that pen.  tough to do as eventually he will catch one.  and if you have a bigger pen, the cost goes up.  always used to run a new beagle with one that was experienced.  not much help, but thats all I have ever seen done.
when out bear hunting, make sure you are at least faster than the slowest person in your party!!!

Well he should have a little drive to hunt, so the biggest thing is to get him on some rabbits.  Either by hunting with dogs that already go.  Or get a rabbit leash, the dog to the fence, show it to him and drag the rabbit on the ground and put it where he can't see it, then lead him along letting him trail it with a little help if needed.  Not to far though and steadily make the distance farther until he will follow the scent for as long as you want to drag it. Then start again with him off the leash.  This takes time but you can really mold the dog a lot more than just running it with others.  That is the quickest way to pick up bad habits, IE deer, coyote, fox and other things that you don't want to spend all you time chasing the dog over.

All it's taken with my beagles has been to get them in a place with rabbits and turn em loose. My male opened on a rabbit the first time out. Another dog I had followed the first trail she ever smelled straight to the hole and started diggin. I believe most of it comes from the bloodline. I've never used tame rabbits, rabbits on a leash or rabbit scent. Get your dog someplace where there's rabbits and let instinct take over.

First of all the pup has to have trust in you,you have to make friends with him.Take him out walking, let him go a head of you.2nd show him the rabbitsIts like trying to teach a kid how to walk.get you a box trap catch a rabbit and let him play arounld with it,it will work I do it all the time for people.

I know Im posting to this a little late but if you read this with our 2 beagles we actually got some tame rabbitts and kinda fiirst let them chase them around the yard but when they got close to the rabbitt we would catch them leaving them wanting more and we would do this 4 or 5 evenings a week then we put them in a chain linked pen that was about 80 yards long by 50 yards wide with a lot of brush and would just turn them loose in there with the tame rabbitts and they would learn the mechanics from there and now there are two excellent hunting dogs what Ive found was hardest is getting them to listen they are the most stubborn dogs to get to listen. Just recently I spoke with another guy who uses rabbitt scent he said you can buy it at cabela's and said it works great for his dogs but personnally Ive never tried. But good luck and hope he turns into one heck of a hunter it really is a fun type of hunting!!
