Back from North of the Border!! - Sunday, September 19, 2010 7:42 PM ( #1 )
Well the weather did not cooperate with us.  We hunted at Rugged Outfitting in Alberta for Moose, Elk, Whitetail, Mule Deer and Bear.  The rain moved in and took one full day and several morning hunts.  However we saw plenty of game, just nothing in bow range.  My hunter had a chocolate color-phase black bear at 21 yds.  But due to the weather, his fall away rest had frozen up and he shot 2 1/2 feet low.  I got some great footage of it but no kills on film for the DZ crew this trip.  But that is why they call it hunting.  2nd trip to Ron Nemechek's place was canceled due to weather and I am sad to say but the Kane Lake outfitters that we all know an love are all burned up.  A wildfire destroyed 6000 acres and the whole camp.  It will be several years before there will be any good hunting up there.  Soooooo I am home early.  May be reassigned to a hunt in TX or OH.  Not sure yet.  For those with Facebook, here is a link to some photos:

Glad and sad for ya at the same time bro. Weather has played heck on many a hunting trips. Sorry to hear about Kane Lake. That sucks.............I believe I saw your first hunt down there in S.C with Hal and the boys last week for hogs. Looked like y'all sweated off a few lbs.  LOL!!!!!!!! If you are headed to Tx soon, hollar at me and I will do my dandest to meet up with ya somewhere. I'll be hunting the opener here on Oct 2nd and then to Wi the next weekend for my reunion. Once back from that for 4 days, I'll be headed back to Wi for 3 weeks. Let me know what you schedule is and I'll do my best.   I looked at the facebook pg man. Georgeous country. I have been to Baniff several times while working up there in Calgary and the surrounding areas. The valley is unbelievable. Did y'all see the grizz tunnel crossings and the elk walk ways on your way? I took my H2S Alive classes right across the st from the Olympic park where they did the ski jumps in your pic's. All of those pic's were great.

Thanks for the comments Gary.  Not sure when/where I will be reassigned but I will let you know.  The hog hunt you saw was from last summer with the Smith & Wesson guys.  I was not on that hunt but the temps for our hunt were the same.  My hunts will not air until next year.  If  you look back in the pics you will see the Chocolate phase Black bear I filmed.  One of our other Field Producers took a picture of the TV while we were reviewing the footage.

We did not see anything but the pics you saw.  We just had a short time to run over to Banff from Calgary but you never know what you will see while you are there.  Me and Mark got hit on by two women from Stuttgart, Germany.  We were able to keep our virtues in tact.

Dave:

Glad that you made it back home safe.  Sorry to hear about your trip being cut short and the issue with the outfitter's camp burning down.  That stinks.

Hunting is hard enough without adding film production into the mix.  It looks "easy" on TV, but most people do not realize the amount of time and effort that goes into making even one broadcast quality episode.  Many hours of hard work are invested if done correctly.

Don't worry, you'll get in on some awesome kills the longer you stick with it.  Hunting and filming are just like anything else: The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.  Just remember that every experience whether good or bad is an education.   What an exciting way to learn a new craft!

Going to look at the FB pics now.

Best of luck on all of your future pursuits!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Loving every second of being in the woods with a camera Steve!  The time I spend doing what I have dreamed of for years will be time well spent.  Woods + Tree + Camera + Hunter = Bliss!  Woods + Tree + My Bow = Meat!  LOL!
