Back From Wi. - Monday, November 08, 2010 7:51 AM ( #1 )
Hey All,
Got back from 3 weeks in the stand up in Wi for the bow season. Overall, it was very dissappointing as far as deer num's, but I had a great time with family and in-laws. The hunt started out in the hole for me already as some of you know from a diff thread. The first Tue night up there, I did knock down a big doe for some bacon and fresh backstrap. After sitting down and looking at the pic's on my cam's, I got a bad feeling in my stomach that this was gonna be a very hard hunt for bone. I saw pic's of my brothers boys walking around my plots with .22's in hand shooting up everything that moved. They had been sitting in my stands, sitting in my dad's ground blind and just in gen. screwing up my deer woods. Now I feel for him as he is going through a divorce and staying with my step-grandmother at the front of this property, but........................it's bow season man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I live for this time of yr up there.  Anyways, my brother-in-law and his buddy flew in on Fri of the first week from Philly and things were starting to get heated up for the bucks. Was starting to see a few scrapes being laid down and a few rubs being done. That Sun night, I put my bro-in-law in my never fail eastside stand and at 4:50 he had one of the big 10's walking in. He was at full draw and waiting for him to take just 2 more steps to open up his vitals when all of a sudden, the kids came screaming out of the house up front and that was all it took and the buck was gone. That night it started to rain and rained for the next 3 days straight. Although not heavy, it was steady. We sat anyways to no avail. Tue the winds started and blow it did. We sat that morning and had to be tied in good or get blown right out of the stands. At 3pm, my dad and a buddy of my bro-in-laws that came with him were walking to their stands when they came upon a monster 8 standing right on front of my dad's ground blind, oblivious to them being there cause of the wind. When they were 25yds from that deer, he finally looked their way and was gone. Note to all: ALWAYS HUNT ON YOUR WAY TO YOUR STANDS. LOL!!!!!! We sat that day and nearly got blown out. Wed was more of the same with the winds but the bucks were moving during the times we were not in the woods. Never did figure out why they were moving during all of that wind. That goes against everything I have learned about deer. Thu had Chris seeing 2 small deer and momma around him 3 diff times but chose to let them walk. Fri was a bust for all and Sat, was the end of the hunt for us. If anything could go wrong or go against us for this hunt, it pretty much did. But hey, that's why it's called "hunting" and not "killing". The following pic's are some of the bucks that kept us all in the woods, inspite of the issues against us. The first pic is the buck my dad and Chris walked up on thet afternoon, windy as all get out. Note the time.

Thanks Dave and to you also. Good luck with all of your upcoming hunts on film and good luck in your off time too. Get you a bigun'. I was after that 10pt but after seeing that one, I was in the woods as much as possible, inspite of all the issues up there.

Gary:

Glad you made it back safe!  Sometimes when it rains it pours and sometimes when the wind blows it howls, but I am sure you know all of that already.  And, sometimes a guy just cannot win no matter how hard he tries, but I suppose that is what makes victory taste that much more sweet when it's finally achieved.

Hang in there and hopefully you'll knock a good one down before the end of the season.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve
