Back From Manitoba - Wednesday, May 28, 2008 11:48 PM ( #1 )
I am finally back home from my spring bear hunting trip to Manitoba with Monty McKenzie of McKenzie Outfitters

I will provide pictures and all of the details of my hunt starting tomorrow.  I'm still a little foggy at the moment from spending two weeks "in the bush" and from the LONG drive home.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Here are some of the first images of my spring bear hunting trip to Manitoba with Monty McKenzie of McKenzie Outfitters.  I hate to admit that I severely dropped the ball on this hunt as I didn't capture as many images as I normally do when documenting an online hunt.  However, I will make it up to you all when I head back up to Canada to hunt with Monty this fall to once again try our luck at killing a big Manitoba black bear.  Unfortunately, I came home without a bear this time around, but the experience was simply amazing!  I will provide more details of my hunt and expound on the overall experience with each successive post.

Here is Monty McKenzie (outfitter), Kara (camp cook) and Tim (guide) beginning to set up the tent that we would call home for the next two weeks.

Monty McKenzie quickly prepares lashings for the tent.

Monty and Tim Haveman secure the poles together that are used to support the tent.

Our tent starts to take shape.

Getting closer to being finished.

A few minor adjustments and our wilderness home is complete.

More posts and images to come...

Take care and Good Hunting!

Everyone:

There are more images and information coming.  Thankfully, Monty and his guides captured more images of Manitoba than I did.  He is working on sending those images to me via E mail, which include pictures of my 35-inch pike and 25-inch walleye, and his 36-inch-plus pike.

Thanks for your patience.

Take care and Good Hunting!

Best Afield,

Steve

Here's a picture of a thick-backed, 35-inch "Water Wolf, Lake Gator" a.k.a. Northern Pike -- one of many -- that fell victim to a Len Thompson spoon that Monty had specially-made for his clients.

Here's a picture of my 25-inch walleye that was taken using the same specially-made lure/Thompson spoon that many of my Northern Pike were caught on.

I don't know what was more thrilling; catching these fish or watching them swim away after releasing them back to the water!

Take care and Good Hunting!

Here's a picture of our float plane  -- a 1960 de Havilland Otter -- taking off as Monty McKenzie, Mark (hunter) and I stand on shore and watch.

Here's a picture of a beaver dam near one of the bait sites.  Beavers in this neck of the woods build elaborate dams.

Here's a picture of the float plane base in Bissett, Manitoba where we met up with Monty McKenzie and began our wilderness journey.

Here's a photo right before sunset of the shoreline.  This shoreline is where the float plane dropped us off and picked us up, and is the access point of camp.

Steve, sounds like everyone I've talked to said the bear hunting was bad at best this spring so far.  1 bear shot at the place I was at.  with a gun at 90 yards.  saw 1 during the first 6 days, and stayed a couple extra days and saw 2 more.  when I get the videos loaded up, will post them and give everyone, the rest of the story.
when out bear hunting, make sure you are at least faster than the slowest person in your party!!!

Jim:

The story is coming, bud.  I just wanted to get as many pictures as possible up on the Talk Forum to provide a "visual" of the hunt for the Talk Forum members like yourself before sitting down and writing the story.

TLC:

The late spring definitely had a negative effect on bear sightings and on the bear hunting in general.  Both Monty (Outfitter) and I knew going in that we were going to be "rolling the dice" on the spring bear hunt with the ice still on the lake two days before we were scheduled to arrive in camp and start hunting -- the ice was still visible on the lake when we landed -- but we figured we would give it a shot anyway.  The guys who fly the float plane were hearing similar stories from outfitters all around that part of Manitoba, so we weren't alone.

Take care and Good Hunting!
