BBD at Dos PLumas Ranch

Hey folk,
I just got back from my Axis,Blackbuck hunt this weekend at Dos Plumas ranch here in Texas. I tried my damdest to get an Axis, but the heat killed me. 105 normal temp with an index of 113. That made it hard for spot and stalk and tring to stay scent free with the suits on made it almost unbearable. They kept giving me a 60 yd buffer zone in the thickets and I could not get any closer even trying to get in front did not work. I did however make a successful hunt on a Blackbuck with my bow. If any of you know anything about these animals, thye are very hard to get close to. Eyes like hawks, skittish as hell and very fast. They tend to stick to more open territory, so getting close is extremely hard. Here are a couple of pic's of my trophy.

Nice Blackbuck Gary, congratulations. The heat has been crazy in the south for the last several weeks that's for sure. I hope you will be able to get another chance to stick an Axis soon!!!!

If you look at it, it is actually starting to turn to the black that they are named for. They get black diamonds that run up their legs to the mid body and from the mid body up is black. It gets white patches around the eyes just as a coon does. They are really pretty animals, and made great mounts. Here is a pic of an good looking one with his color.

I'm glad you put up that last post and picture. I was really wondering about the color of the one you shot because the few I saw down in high fence places when I used to hunt down in Texas were real dark.

I tried top, to find one that had his full color but had no luck. They must have been doing the bachelor thing, I guess. This one here I watched rake a mesquite tree for 20 min's and kind of figured he was the boss buck. When he gave me a shot, I took it. Next yr or so he may have had his full color, but I am happy as hell to have gotten this one.

Yeah top, I'm having him mounted. My taxi said he should have him back to me in 60 days. At that point, I will try again for an axis, if not I'll take a Fallow buck. They should be out of velvet by then and from what I saw last weekend, it should be a good hunt. I had real nice fallows around me all weekend, but all in velvet so they were off limits. I can't wait. Ya'll check out DosPlumasHuntingRanch.com Allen claims to fame that it is a working man's ranch and he aint kidding. Their prices are very reasonable and catered to us working guys. More animals than I have seen at any ranches I have hunted here in Tx since I got here. His wife Lori will fill you with homecooking to where you go away from the table stuffed. Check them out folks.

I'm guessing you looked them up. Allen is a bowhunter at heart and loves to hunt, therefore good prices for us stick and string users and working stiffs. LOL

Tina,
I have hunted axis before but with no. I have heard them bark before and it is spooky when it's dark outside and you are not expecting it. I also heard them barking at me as I got closer with my spot and stalk. Not a good sound to hear at that point. LMAO!!! I'll be back chasing them again real soon. I want to wait until the fallow's are out of velvet first. My first set of blackbucks, I was able to get within 45 yds of before the wind switched and they blew out of there. They were in a field and I in the woodline. Most of them stay to the open and are hard to get to unless gun hunting them.
